Hows it going everyone, well im new to the Buick world and Im loving it, I just got a 1987 GN, 14,400 km, and all original paint, now I just had my car into the local GM dealership today to have a safety and so fourth done so I can get it ready to drive next spring, I only had the delear replace the rear diff fluid and engine coolant today, since i want to do a little bit of stuff my self, as I was getting ready to leave my mechanic told me that he had to plug in a plug under the hood, but it was already unplugged before I took it there so i told hime just to leave it since I think there is a chip in the car? So if your all following me, on the drivers side fender in the engine compartment there are three little boxes im assuming there relays for fans or etc,, But the one that is unplugged is bigger than the first two, also there are two connecters that plug in and only one is plugged in ANy ideas out there, I havent found a good source yet for a buick manual but if there are any please let me know, thanks everyone!!

The large one is the coolant fan relay, I bet the reason it was unpluged cause it's bad. Sometimes when they give trouble they will come on for no reason even if the car has been parked for a while, killing the battery.

This will help with sensor location

big relay

Hi,
The large relay on the driver's side is the the high speed fan delay relay. It runs when the car is off, to cool things. It is totally functional thru the coolant temp switch underneath the throttle body. It's a BS design, if you ask me, and yes, it does turn on, on it's own, sometimes. Not one of the better designed items on our cars, I think. You could always eliminate it, I suppose...

I have a new one if needed, not really cheap @65.00 shipped. one only

I think you will find the consensus here on the board.... is leave the two plugs unplugged from that bigger relay.... that will eliminate the fan ever trying to come on without the car running. The fan still works just fine when the car is running... even with those connectors unhooked.
