I am trying to remove my pass. side mirror, I assume the remote cable needs to be pulled out with it?

Are there any tips or tricks for getting the remote cable through the dash and out through the door?

Is it necessary to remove the dash/radio/HVAC controls?

Thanks.

Pete

I hate it for you. You shouldn't have to remove anything besides the door panel to get it off, but it gets a little uncomfortable working under the dash. I think you need a small alen to pull the control out of its mount, and a lot of patience. Just a word of warning, the mirror itself will appear to be too loose while its out of the car, but once its back in it will tighten back up. HTH  , James.

Yes, the cable needs to come out with the mirror.

If you were to tie a line to the end of the cable before you pull the mirror and cable from the car, you will have a reference for the path that is necessary to reinstall the cable.

Even after doing that, the problem areas are the grommet area in the door pillar and the last few inches prior to the point where the cable comes through the dash bezel.

I would get a new mirror mount pad because you don't want to have to do this job again. Good Luck.

I did it the entirely wrong way I opened her up and noticed it might take more than a minute so I put the plain mirror on it without the cable.....

sorry I just wanted my post count to go up another notch but the post is true.

I horsed around with this yesterday and yes it seems to be a major PITA. What do you mean get a new mount pad? Is it possible to break the mirror, remove the cable and glue in a new one later?

The reason I am removing the mirror is to paint the car, and I don't want to get hung up on this forever...

Even bolting in a manual mirror is looking good right now :)

The mount pad is the pad where the base of the mirror assembly meets the door. It is not behind the mirror.

The reason that I know how the mirror is replaced is because my car was repainted and the painter destroyed the original remote mirror. It pointed straight down after the paint job and could not be adjusted because the cable got stretched during removal.

It might be possible to disconnect the mirror control toggle to allow enough slack where the painter can move the mirror enough to paint between the mirror and window glass and still allow easier replacement.

I removed mine 2 years ago when I had my car painted. I tied a piece of heavy string to the cable when I pulled it from under the dash and through the door. When I had to reinstall the mirror I just retied the string to the cable and pulled it through the door and under the dash. Not really a great big deal. Or you could double nut the mirror on the outside and the mirror would be bolted on but raised a 1/2" or so. And the painter could paint the mirror and around/under it. I'm real picky so I just removed the entire mirror.
But then again I removed every piece of trim and all the glass from the entire car. I did not want any tape lines. Depends on what you want the final product to look like.

Thanks for the tips, I need to spend more time under the dash locating the cable. Pulling the glovebox and the cover under it did not reveal the cable :(

John, that is a sweet Limited, and your paint job is badass

I believe it ran across the firewall behind the dash and was secured by some metal straps. I would start from under the instrument cluster. I know if you pull the ECM and it's cover you can see it coming through the door post.

Thanks for the compliment. What color combo do you have?

I just pulled mine last night (again  ). The cable is held to the firewall with metal straps like previos post said. If you pull the carpet back from the firewall on the pass side you should see it. If your getting it painted, go ahead and pull it all the way out for the painter, it will make his life much easier. They have it hard enough as it is. Body work is a PITA!

i herd that 1981 corvetts have both manual mirrors that look like the same as ours and they will bolt right in... maby turbofish38 could chime in on this one...

You are correct, body-work is a PITA, I will try to make the painter's life easier, because the painter is me :)

JC Turbo, the car is an 87 GN, so the color combo is PPG 1683 BLACK

I had one of those remote mirrors on my GN. When I painted it, I pulled it off and threw it on the shelf and replaced it with a standard Regal mirror. To go through all that trouble for that useless option, is a waste of time and aggravation. :p

Thanks for the tips on pulling back the carpet, it was easy to find and get the cable out of the metal hook. After I pulled the ecm and the trim panel behind it, it was a two minute job to pull the cable through the door

I also ran a wire through with the end of the cable so it will be easy to re-install :D
