Turbo link, scan master, direct scan, etc. are all great tools but maybe a little expensive for some. Most people are familiar with OTC Monitor 2000's (and 4000's) and they can be found for a little less sometimes. There is something a lot cheaper, just as good, but not as well know.
OTC Monitor 85's
The Monitor 85 is a predecessor fo the 2000. It doesn't use cartirdges, only does GM and only up 'til 1985. But that's exactly what we need. Otherwise they should do everything a 2000 does. Since they have limited application, they aren't nearly as expensive. I just bought one on ebay for $5. There are a couple of others on there now:
