Hey, I have a problem with my tranny starting off in 2nd gear occasionally. If I drive the car with a fairly light foot the trans will shift nice and tight 1-2, 2-3 and then start off in 1st at a stop. Adjusting the TV cable responds well with a click or two forward making the shifts sooner but still firm. The tranny is a built unit with higher pressures so adjusting the TV the normal way plus a couple of clicks foward seems to get it to shift right. When I get on the gas hard the trans shifts great through the gears but then will occasionally downshift really hard into 2nd when slowing down and at say 25-30mph, then start off in second from a dead stop. I have found that stabbing the throttle to the floor really hard for a spit second seems to relieve the problem and the tranny will shift fine until it gets hung up again. Also when this happens I shift manually to get the tranny to pull in first, I will get on the throttle 3/4 to full pedal and it will hold first for a while shift hard to second hold that gear for awhile then finally bang third and will almost never find OD even at 75-85 mph until I stab the throttle to the floor for a spit second and it shifts to OD. Please help...Thanks

If you put it in neutral & back to D or OD does it start in Lo?
How much line press. do you have @ min. TV?

I will have to take it in to the local tranny shop to have the line pressure checked out. I don't think it will start in 1st if I put it in N or OD and back to D but will double check tommorow. Thanks...

Could be too much line pressure overwhelming the governor. If you loosen the TV cable will it always start off in first?

Yes I think if over 100 lbs. if you have too strong of PR spring press. could still be over 100.
You could loosen a couple clicks & try it.

I have been dealing with this for about a month now and it turned out a New shift kit Superior brand and a seperator plate fixed mine. I hop this will fix yours cause I went threw Hell to find out what was up with mine.

Yeah this problem is a real piss off but it seems almost as if the TV cable is binding...maybe there is some crap in the valvebody? When it acts up I'll pull the car over and disconnect the TV cable and pull on it, feels almost like it is scrubbing on something and then it comes free after a couple of pulls, the tranny shifts normally for a while until I get on it and then it binds again???? If I pull the pan, how difficult is it to check the TV valve bore? I have tried taking a couple of clicks out and it seems to help a bit but shifts way to soon with a fast 1-2, 2-3 at low speed.

First

Ck line pressure. In a brf, czf, kzf or oz the mainline pressure maximum is 145 psi at idle. In the others over 125 will stick it sometimes. Ck line pressure before doing anything else. Also, did you remove the spring on the govenor on the heavy weight side?

Ck and report back

Reminds me a little bit of my problem (been plagued with it for years, and DRW didn't have a clue how to fix it).

The trans works perfectly normal in ALL situations except:

When I manuall put the shifter in 2nd, that's where the car will start from a dead stop. It never pulls its self down into 1st.

However, with the shifter in ANY position other than 2nd, all is well, the tranny downshifts normally when coming to a stop and ends up in 1st.

BTW, I'm still plagued by this problem.
