I have a Precision Industries single disc Vigilante torque convertor, lock up. Its like 3200 stall. Should I be manually locking this thing or not? I hear conflicting opinions, and need to know. Thanks!

I'd say call Precision.
See if it's designed to withstand the punishment you're about to unleash on it.

Originally TCCs were just designed to eliminate the slippage of the converter to get the best MPG possible.

It's worth about 2 tenths and 2 mph, and since you're not WOT all the time it shouldn't hurt ya too much. Besides, it locks up around 45 mph during regular driving anyways.

turbosam6,
Im in the same boat as you. I have a very similar combo (11.10's@123) with the same exact convertor. I dont lock it and I go through the traps at about 5900. I have good MPH as you can see but havent tried to lock it at WOT since I dont know if it can handle it with it being only the single disk. Hopefully we can get an answer!

convertor

Precision recommends locking at the top of 3rd gear. My first lockup Precision was one of their earlier single dics lockup. I was using a manual switch, fliping it on before leaving the line. It would lock as soon as the car went into second gear. I ran this for 3 years at mid 11s @ 115 mph. When precision came out with their multi dics, I sent mine in to be updated. Altho it was still working fine, both on the track and street, they said is was pretty well used up. I have 2 seasons on this convertor @ low 11--high 10s at 120+, but I have never locked it manually. Red Armstrong burns my chips. He has it programed to lockup at wide open throttle at 90 MPH. He can change this signal in 6 mph increments. He orginally had mine locking @ 84, but this was too soon as it would bog the eng. on lockup.

My car shifts 1-2 @ 57-5800
2-3 @ 57-5800, then at 5500 in third the convertor locks and the rpms drop back to 4900, then pulls back up to 5800 through the traps. without locking the convertor, I would be out of rpms before the end of 1/4 mile.

Remember, THE CONVERTOR CANNOT MULTIPLY TORQUE WHEN LOCKED. Hope this is what you are locking for.

hmmmm....maybe my chip isn't locking the convertor. Its an ext.chip, I know it locks during street driving, I can feel it. But I have to shift into 4th in the quarter. With 28" tires. Maybe Bob can chime in here and tell me what its supposed to lock up at mph wise. Is locking it manually and letting the chip lock it the same thing?

Get you Extender updated to Rev E and then you can set the WOT TCC l/u wherever you want, in 4 mph increments. Sure beats having to send your chip back if it isn't where you want it. It also means one less thing to try to remember while you're staging ;)

You know what dude? I just had it upgraded when I got these injectors, and I was just reading about that in my instructions. Must have been a brain fart on my part, I should have remembered that. What would be a good starting point to set it at?

Anywhere in the 80mph range is a good starting point. You can tweak from there. The 2-3 shift generally happens around 60-65mph(at WOT) so you'll be rolling good by the time the TCC locks.

Works best for me anyway. And even works good for highway use. Passing on two lanes highways can be pesky, and that lockup helps ;)

Thanks for the help guys! Man, I would be lost without this board! Too bad its too cold to go try it out. I hate winter.
