With the combo that I have,(see below), stock turbo and stock injectors I am running 16lbs of boost, 42psi line off, and 02's at 800 at the top of 3rd gear with a JC 93 chip. Other chips that I can use are a JC 110 race chip, Thrasher 92, Thrasher 100, and a Thrasher 108. Which one would you start off with while attempting to tune with the SMC alky kit for the first time? And how would you go about it as for as fuel pressure, boost, turn on point, pump speed, etc.? For example, if I use the Thrasher 100 I know it will knock at 16lbs of boost due to the increased timing. So would you just leave the boost there and start off with the pump speed down low, like around 3 or 4? Just trying to figure out how to go about this for the first time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, R.B.

I'm by no means an expert, but I started by trying to tune my car for zero knock with pump gas and the chip I had. After that I added the alcohol and started with a turn on point of 10 lbs and a pump speed of 5 I then added boost until I started to see knock. I then turned up the pump speed on the alcohol and kept adding boost until I got to a pump speed of 8 with near zero knock. I then increased the turn on point until it showed knock and backed it down a little just to be safe. With a pump speed of 8 and a RA 108 chip I run 24 lbs of boost with no detonation. I have a TA 49 so my car really likes the higher timing chips. I think by adding a power plate and having a low turn on point you can minimize transitional knock. My car still runs a little rich, but the alcohol works really well.

Here's what I did. Use the low timing chip first. You will need to set the turn on point pretty high so it doesnt flood the motor. You should be able to max out your wastegate rod with the low timing chip. You want to keep the stock turbo around 22psi. Once you get the hang of making your adjustments throw in the Thrasher 100. It has A LOT more top end pull and you will like it. I have tried the T-100 and 108, and the 100 is much more forgiving, has lots of top end, and zero transitional knock. Save the 108 for race gas.

My combo is the same as yours and I am running a .025 jet and turn on point of 15psi. Pump speed 10 (mine is not adjustable)

Bigz, That was excellent. You are now in Turbo_Tim's archives! :)

You may see this post again when someone asks about tuning. Bigz has got it down!

I'm sure there are a few more ideas out there, but you can't beat that for starting out.

Hey bigz, what mixture are you running? How did you settle on the final mix?

Man, this is great! How about some more first time tuning tips. Thanks, R.B.

I use a higher turn on point because I dont like my alcohol coming on at part throttle. I hit 10psi so easy its rediculous, and I dont like that "bogging feeling" I may even turn mine up to 16psi as long as I dont get any third gear knock.

As Bigz pointed out I think a power plate is crucial to alcohol and higher timing. They go together like bread and butter:D

See my signature for combo/times. My turn-on point is 15# and my pump speed is 9 with the 21* Extender. I run 50/50 denatured/distilled water. I just installed a power plate and a 23* Extender, but I have not played with this set up yet.

Yeah we havent really discussed mixture in this thread, but tune initially with a 100% denatured, and then slowly add water. I am at 60/40 and will never go back to 100%, besides its cheaper:D

What is the difference between let's say 70/30 denatured mix and 70% isoproplyl which is already 70/30 alchohol and water?

The only difference is isoprpyl alcohol vs. denatured alcohol. Denatured has slightly higher octane (has a small % of methanol)
