My speedometer needle is starting to jump around while driving around in town. What is the preferred lubricant and method to lubricate the speedometer for our cars?

Thank you

The factory grease on the cable is probably dried up and brittle, remove the cable from the dash cluster, use a small brush(old toothbrush) and some white grease is fine, brush a small amount onto the cable as you feed it back into the housing, leave about a foot ungrease towards the speedometer head, so it doesn't get on the faceplate, hope that helps :)

The old story was dry graphite but don't do that. Use the white lithium grease or check the local parts store. I know I saw some stuff in Pep Boys or the like.

My friends wife used to run a place that rebuilt and calibrated speedometers and did some military work. I tried to get the mil-spec part number and stuff but never found it.
