anyone knowhow to remove play in steering box,87 regal?

Yes, the only special tool is an inch-pound beam style torque wrench. Basically, the box is removed from the vehicle (pitman arm can stay on box). The fluid is drained. The box is then mounted in a bench vise.

The top center adjustment is backed off (sector screw). The thrust backlash is then adjusted. This is the large nut & end plug at the top of the box.

Then the sector screw adjustment is made.

This link has an OK procedure for it. Part 2 (ignore part 1):

Done correctly a lot of play can be eliminated. There are other wear areas that can contribute to play in the box. So if the above doesn't do the trick, then it is time for a rebuild.

Don't forget about the rag-joint/intermediate-shaft. That too can easily contribute to lost motion in the steering.
