I need to put a simple alarm on my storage shed. It's wired so power is not an issue. I'd like to have one that has an internally mounted key pad with a timer. I've looked all over the internet and can't find what I'm looking for. Anyone got any suggestions? What do you use on your storage buildings?

Ive used a inexpensive self contained car alarm before.ran off a calculator power supply (it had 12 volt out),used hood pin switch on door, put an extra siren outside.....wireless remote was used that came with it.....flashing strobe light used also.....
radio shack also still carried (two years ago when i was looking) inexpensive home alarms too...

If you have an alarm system for your house...add a wireless receiver to it and install wireless transmitters to the shed. Zone it on its own zone and you can arm/disarm/bypass all from your house keypads.

I have an Ademco 4110 on my house. That's a great idea!

Ademco is good stuff. I think the 5800 series works with the 4110. I may be wrong. Double check with your alarm company. You can use other brands like Linear or Visonic if you like.

Here's some on ebay. The shock sensors will detect breaking glass or percussion and they have terminals so you can add contacts to the openings.

Ademco wireless receiver(M) and 3 transmiters/shock sen - eBay (item 290273964655 end time Nov-12-08 08:37:25 PST)

That's great! I could add the wireless receiver then use a motion detector in the shed or even add some motion detectors in other areas??
I assume the wireless receiver mounts near the alarm panel and would show up as another zone on the keypad? Would each added motion detector show as a separate zone or as one since they're run off the wireless receiver?

Man, I really appreciate your help! I have a friend who got broken into friday night. Wiped him out pretty good. Now I want to expand my security

Infrared motions should only be used in a tempurature controlled environment. If the shed gets too hot inside the motion won't work.

Perimeter contacts, glassbreak and/or percussion detectors should suffice.

Depending on the receiver you can add many 'zones' to the alarm. Wire up the receiver next to the panel and test the communication with the transmitters. if the signal is weak..relocate the receiver by running a wire and test signals before permanently mounting.

I have mounted receivers in a large waterproof box outside...worst case scenerio.

Most 4110 systems are not expandable. That means no 5800 series honeywell/ademco stuff will work with it.

Are you looking to get this monitored or just local (hooked up to a siren only)?

How many openings (doors, windows)

Is your home monitored by ADT?

BTW...I might be able to put a small system together for you from stuff I have laying around. I've been in this business for 10 years

Must be the 5700 series then. The receivers are on ebay now and then, but door/window transmitters are scarce.

Probably be easier to use a universal like Linear or Visonic and just wire it up to one burg zone. He could do that himself without any programing.

The 4110's are a basic system that do not accept any expansion modules, such as wireless receivers and such. We usually replace them with Vista15P's if we are upgrading a small system and want to retain the equipment that is already in place (keypads, motions, etc..)

I'm not too big of a fan of Visonic, don't know too much about Linear either. My favorite is the Honeywell/Ademco stuff. Every once in awhile we do GE stuff, but they can be maintenance nightmares in my experience.

My suggestion would be to use a Vista 10se or 15p and just contact the openings (doors and windows.) If you want a motion, you'll pay a lot for a motion that can be used in an environment that is not heated or cooled. I can get a Vista15p pack for a decent price. It comes with a keypad with a built in receiver. I would put the keypad inside the shed and add on a wireless keyfob so you can arm/disarm from a distance. If it is not to be monitored, I would also add on a 100+db siren.

You can put a single channel wireless on any system. Give it power and series the nc loop onto the zone.

That would be simplest and cheapest providing it is within signal range.

I would recommend a upgrade to a newer system with a wireless receiver built into the keypad and a keyfob too. Depends on how much he wants to spend and how much $ he's got in that shed.

Yeah, you can do it that way, but we don't know if his house system has an open zone or not. If it does, he would still have to get into programming and enable that zone for whatever zone type he wishes. Some security dealers lock the customers out of programming.

I can probably put something together for him for about $200 or so. I can even program it for him over the phone. I don't mind...all my side money goes into the car fund...In fact I built my car doing low voltage side work (audio, video, security, cctv, etc..) My wife looks down on me spending "our" money on it lol.

Yeah, I was thinking DIY and just series it in on a zone already being used to avoid programming. Its basic, but it would serve the purpose of protecting the shed.

Alarm companies shouldn't lock out a panel unless they have a signed monitoring contract. A lot still do anyways.

I have a 'unlocker' device just in case. :p

$200 is a good price. Better hope he doesn't have 3 keypads already though.

I was saying $200 for a complete new system. Probably a GE, or Ademco 10se or 15p. I'll have to go to my shed and see what I have left. I just helped a friend out and used 2 for his house and garage. He lives on a few acres and someone cleaned him out while he was at work:eek:

Okay, I've been thinking about this. I think it might be best to have a separate system on the building unless you guys can think of reason not to. My reasoning is this, when I'm home I typically don't have the house alarm set until bed time. While I'm sitting there eating ice cream and watching TV the building could be getting cleaned out. Would it be better to have a separate system and keep it armed at all times? If so, I'd like to put together a decent system for under a hundred bucks.

On a side note: I do want to add another zone in my house system. Will my 4110 accomodate an addition? I am using 4 zones in the system now.

I would use 2 systems. You could upgrade the current house system to a 2 partition system....which would enable you to operate both the shed and the house as 2 systems but would let you disarm or arm either from the same keypad.

Yes the 4110 can handle up to 6 zones.

I would just put a whole separate system in the shed (keypad, control panel and all sensors)

Can you recommend a decent system?.. or do you have something you'd be willing to part with that will work? I'd like to hardwire one door, want a keypad, battery backup and a LOUD siren.
