I know we've got a lot of military on here, and I think a few other bubbleheads. Check out this email that was sent out from our CO today:

To all,
I need to make sure everyone realizes Ms. XXXXX's position in our command. She is the civilian equivalent to Executive Officer and will be treated as such. If anyone has a question about her wearing Dolphins, please feel free to ask the CMC.

Command Officer

So basically, our Female Civilian Executive Officer is walking around wearing a set of ENLISTED Dolphins on her lapel. Not the minitures, the full size ones.

This pisses me off so much. For guys from other services, imagine your command just giving away Jump Pins, or Special Warfare pins.

She's a female=Can't be a submariner
She's a civilian=Isn't in the Navy, and never has been.
She's serving as the XO=Should be wearing OFFICER's Dolphins

What a good way to make us that earn our living feel like ****. Anybody else with Dolphins agree?

Are you shizzin me!

That would royaly piss me off and should be addressed to the Master Chief, so he can do something about it. If his opinion to the CO doesn't make a diffrence, his ass should be sacked (CO) that is.

Navy/Marine Corp policy is here for a reason, to up hold rules and regulations and anyone that falls under him (CO) should also respect it as such.

If you don't earn it, you can't wear it. Violating Uniform Regs from what I remember. Welcome to the new military though...I put all my retired stuff away because of the way they started handing stuff out like candy. De-values the award system. If she is serving in some official military capacity, there will be a special pin or badge to wear in lieu of a warfare/qual pin.

Never again Volunteer Yourself

As far as im aware, there are no regulations regarding the wearing of military insignias (not saying they dont exist) by civilians. I personally dont take offense to anyone wearing insignias, when i fist joined, your warfare designator set you apart from everyone else, now its a requirement that has lead many commands to cut corners. I remember seeing a cartoon of a NAM machine nestled in between the coke and geedunk machines and that pretty much sums up how its become in reality. As far as the CO authorizing it, thats a load of BS, youd think that a captain would have the foresight to know that it would cause trouble. I guess its his way of sucking up to the civilian, but he should have let her wear zeros dolphins if any. That is like saying, no you cant wear gold because youre not elite like us but you can wear silver. WTF??

Welcome to your new and IMPROVED military produced by Mr. Bush!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :(

Get real, try looking at what Clinton started.

The CO is a moron, plain and simple.

Heck, look at Kerry (and a few others) as far as what medals mean to members of Congress.

It's not just about **HIM**. He can only sign into law what Congress puts in front of him. The problem is alot worse then just one guy.

YES, I agree, but.........he has alot to do with it!

Saying this, I did not vote for either candidate cause I did'nt like either.

I throughly think he is a moron PUPPET!

blackbird are you a submariner? I don't know about all of this. Outside of the submarine community I'm not so sure it would be a big deal, but inside it is.

You have to work damned hard to get your Dolphins, and once you get them its something you're proud of. It's something that sets us aside from everyone else. We could all easily have chosen our surface rates, but we volunteered for this.

What the Captain did totally devalues the pin. It's him saying that the months of effort that we all put forth, working 3-4 hours a day of off watch time are worthless. She works a regular gov't job, 7am-4pm. She gets paid much more than us and has no idea what the sacrifice is to earn those pins.

That is like saying, no you cant wear gold because youre not elite like us but you can wear silver. WTF??

I guess he was thinking that she never qualified Officer of the Deck or Dive Officer...... wait she never qualified submarines either.

A couple of guys went to the COB's office and put their Dolphins on his desk. I haven't heard what happened there yet.

Keep us informed, this could get very intresting.

All I got to say is you try that crap in the Marine Corps with people who are Force Recon, EOD, Jump Quald, Crew Chiefs etc.

Hell is to be paid, these guys would bust your balls like there is no return and will take it to the top. It's a legit complaint, so fight it, run it up your chain of command.

Never be afraid to do what's right, even superiors make mistakes and a real professional will correct it on the spot.

Ugh, someone needs to arrange a code red on her ass

and yes there is a law concerning civilians wearing military uniforms... Its illegal to impersonate a member of the services. I have to find the law, its federal, and I have seen it.

btw what ray said is so true, if some kunt civilian went walking around with jump wings and scuba bubbles, or air crew, or eod, etc pins there would be hell to pay around here

Take off the dolphins!

Someone who has not served on submarine and gone through the qualification process and proved themselves to the crew does not deserve to wear "dolphins". This brings discredit to the force! I would be interested to know what command this is.

i am a little lost....in what capacity is this female civilian acting as XO??????????????? is she serving on board ship? why in the world did this happen, who made it happen?

i am not a submariner, but i did EARN a deterrant pin on a midshipman cruise, i spent 33 days (30 straight underwater) and am fully qualified helms/planesman and was a backup hoseman on the watchbill (just showing i didnt skate thru my cruise, as i did get halfway thru my dolphin qual and still have my qual book)

btw, for those not aware of what this means, it means i drove a nuclear ballistic missile submarine for a month....truly one of the best jobs in the navy due to short durations, and higher pay.....not many jobs in the navy beat being on a boomer.....granted im a pilot and wouldnt trade it for anything....but i am very pleased i got to see how it is under the water....funny i have spent the majority of my career looking for those boats as a p-3 pilot :)

back to the point, i 100% agree with most, no one in the military not to mention NOT in the military should be wearing ANY warfare pin they didnt earn......seriously, is she wearing this pin on her blouse? WTF!?!?!?!?!

So here's the story as it was explained to me.

When guys retire, traditionally their wives are issued an "Honourary Submariner" Certificate. Apparently her husband was a Chief or something, that I'm not quite certain of. Along with the certificate she was issued a small lapel pin of Dolphins.

For a time she was walking around with full on NEX Brand Dolphins on her lapel.

I haven't seen her wear them in a while, but nothing has been said. It's the unspoken word that we're not allowed to say anything about it.

TurboPete, I emailed you back.

And also, we got yelled at for asking if we could pin them on :D

well if she was wearing a small pin on her lapel in a social setting, thats no big deal, my wife wears a set of my WINGS around her neck (small) all the time....but my CO will never designate her as XO....thats the part i dont get??

Long story short about the XO thing.....

About a year and a half ago our old CO stepped up to become the Commodore of a supervisory command. He basically does the same job, but now he's in charge of Norfolk and Kings Bay as well. At least that's my impression of it.

The old XO stepped up to become CO of the existing command, leaving the XO Billet empty.

The Commodore and CO changed over last September. The CO decided that he wanted an XO, so he designated this woman as the Executive Deputy. He made our old Admin Officer the Exectutive Assistant. So between the two of them they fill the XO Billet.

She does all the XO work, but when they need an Officer to sign his name, the Executive Assistant steps in (XOI's and the like).

Sound complicated? It is. Most of us have no idea what the hell's going on. I want to go back to sea.

none of that makes sense because when the XO became CO, bupers should have (and had already planned on it) named an XO months ago

he would have gone to CO/XO school....well before change of command so that he would have been a PXO on your boat

from what you say, there is some shady stuff going on...because no matter what, if you guys had to go underway tomorrow....you NEED an XO....so what gives?

Dang.... I'm lost too, I'm so glad I joined the USAF, though I can't compete job wise. Though right now I'm like the only military member of my organization and despite being an O-1, I'm bottom of the totem pole. Oh well squiddies, got one last thing to say...

Beat Army, Sink Navy, hell beat everyone!!
