Just got my car back together and after putting 100 miles on new motor
and new stall noticed tapping noise coming from the convertor area
Did all the usual stuff checked convertor bolts checked fly wheel bolts
checked crank sensor headers etc...
when the car is cold doesnt make a sound only starts tapping when its at
operating temp. and not at idle only between 1200 to 2000 rpms
when you shut the car off you can hear somthing rattling around in the convertor area.
I disconnected the convertor and slid it back and ran engine no noise
was heard. I spin the convertor by hand and heard nothing.
I never heard the noise with the old convertor but who could hear anything with all the noise the old motor was makin:D
Trans shifts fine and crisp convertor locks up great and the car runs great
but the tapping has me worried you can hear it from inside the car when you are rolling thru town at low speeds
I have already contacted the supplier of the convertor and he said they would be glad to check it out
Just dont wont to waste anybodies time.
Should i send the convertor back or take the whole car to a trans shop?
Thanks

a thought

Just a thought but if it dosn't do it cold...(oil thicker taking up more tollerance in bearings) but does do it hot you may have a little rod knock?

no knock

i have disconnected the convertor and run the engine and ther is no noise so the noise is positivly coming from the convertor/trans.

converters dont usually cause those types of noises.it sounds more like a spider crack in the flywheel at the crankshaft mounting flange area.bang the flywheel with a hammwer with the trans removed.the noise should be a vibrant ring,if not look for cracks.unloading the converter from the trans will usually not allow a crack to make noise.

flywheel

Thanks Chris just put the car back together and when i installed the flywhell i could not find any cracks
also the noise continues for a second or 2 after the engine is shut off
could it be the pump in the trans?
and it only does it between 1200 - 2000 rpm. When i load the engine up
it doesnt seem to make any noise just makes noise on light throttle?in all gears and nuetral
I spoke with some at your shop yesterday about sending the convertor back to you but i just want to make sure that is the problem and not waste anyone time i will be pulling the trans in the next day or two.
Thanks

I have the same problem too ever since I changed motor & tranny. The converter is from old set up. It was quiet back then. I started a thread way back and received intresting responces as to what it could be. HTH.
BTW, I still have the tick, car still runs great. (Knock on wood.) Just no $$ & time to rip apart.
Hope you track it down.

Steve.
