I just break stuff!

Just thought I would get some input, before I start tearing things up.

I searched the forums and couldn't find any specific information.

I am going to block off the coolant lines to the Throttle body. Anything I need to be careful of? What type of plug to use? Should I just connect one to the other? Currently residing in KY, so it wont be driven in the winter.

EGR removal. Use a fuel pump block plate with some RTV? Block off the line that connects to the EGR?

Any recommendations to go in place of the oil fill tube in the valve cover, what type of valve cover breather? Is one breather enough? What to use to plug the inlet from the MAF to the TB?

I would rather sound naive and ignorant than screw up my car, so let me hear what worked for you guys out there.

Thanks for your help

Since I am asking newbie questions, 1 more

Did these cars com from the factory with headers or exhaust manifolds?

I've looked at mine and they have the appearance of headers, definitely dont look like the iron exhaust manifolds I'm used to seeing on SBCs. I'll entertain any header recommendations as well, thanks.

Connecting one to the other works fine.

Any block-off plate works. Some have just used JB weld and glued the inside of the EGR shut. You will need another chip when you do this to disable the EGR

Get a breather from Postonbuick.com, or any other vendor. One will be sufficient as there is really no other place for a second breather unless you change the VC on the PS side.

Go the autoparts store and get a 3/4" rubber plug for the hole in the MAF/inlet tube.

Headers are stock.

New chip???

Hey Jeryll, how goes it.

I didn't think the egr removal required a chip mod, I mean Eric does not ask this on the ordering page of the website...Since it is a very common mod I would think he would ask this. His ordering page is very detailed, even asks if your MPH is correct so he can account for the 145mph mod. I am curious about it because I have some funky stuff going on that I am having a hard time tracking down. Now you have me wondering if it might be because the ECM thinks I have an egr hooked up.

IIRC, the EGR function is removed to use space for other things. Unless you specifically ask for it to be retained.

Beware of the valve cover breather from Postons. I ordered one for my car and with my stock intake tube it was too tall and would not sit under it no matter what I did trying to get it to fit. Check with Brian from gbodyparts.com, they have ones that are angled like hte stock filler neck so I think they would work.

Two seperate issues gents. One is the ECM/Chip issue, the other is the actual mechanical issue with the EGR. The EGR may be disabled but you could still have mechanical leakage at the EGR.

Working on mine as we speak since I am having some KR issues. Even though I am pretty sure my EGR does not leak (Tested it), I am going to remove the tube and add a few pipe plugs to make SURE it it not an issue. Easy enough this way (with the plug) to just add the tube back on for inspection.

Correct. You want to use it as in the 87 set-up, without the OEM filler tube.
There is a short AL tube you can get. Make sure you measure so there is no interference with the intake tube.

The chip needs to be burned with no EGR provision because it will detonate at part throttle with the EGR mechanically disconnected. A chip made for EGR will have too much timing at part throttle.

I used a flat piece of aluminum for an EGR block off plate. I cut it to the approximate size and used a grinder to shape it and make it look pretty.

For the manifold side, I could never find anything that would seal right. I wanted to find a plug that would screw in but that wouldn't work. Since I have an extra pipe I cut the stock one short, put some silicone in the end, crimped it and folded it in on itself. No leaks in the past year and a half it's been running.

The drivers side header is all you will ever need, it will get you deep into the 10s. The passenger side is junk on the hotairs. Passenger header, uppipe to the turbo and down pipe will make a huge gain.

For breathers I bought some from a local hotrod shop. They accept a 5/8" heater hose which I routed back to the firewall and followed the trans under the car. The open element breathers will sometimes drip on the headers. I didn't think much of this until it did it once with the hood up and I realized every time it drips, there's a good sized flame on the header.

For blocking off the coolant lines I like to use vacuum caps available at any autoparts store. It looks much cleaner this way.

coolant lines

i remove the big line and did some grinding to remove the small hose connections, then waited for jb weld thicken a little before using 3 years now no trouble,

i put my poston's breather tube in the lathe at school and machined it down and machined the grove on the inside back in works great and looks good.

My two cents(soon to be a nickel) on the Postons breather. The Postons breather is designed to replace the stock plastic oil fill tube and breather which is piece of junk from GM. The Postons breather goes right onto the valve cover. I hate the original oil fill tube because it caused me a pressurized block problem. Anyone want pictures I will send them. Brad

Well I agree that the stock tube is crap but when I ordered a breather from Postons no matter how I tried installing it, it was too tall and it would hit my stock air intake tube and cause the breather part to not fit onto the tube right. I even tried taking my air tube of and then installing the breather then putting the air tube back on but it still wouldnt fit. I guess Id like to see pics of yours Brad and see how you did it.
