Think I fried the ALDL outputs on the ECM?

My scanmaster
stopped after I was hooking up a tach. I accidently pulled the SM wire out of
the ALDL port, I put it back in, but to the last one on the top row. I couldnt
remember where it went. Of course, now I know top row, second from left. I did
wire the power for the tach off the same power wire for the SM, and used the
same ground, tach works fine, the SM wouldnt come on. I removed the tach wiring,
& moved the ALDL wire around, and it would sometimes light up 2.0( no blinking
lights)then go out after a few seconds. In the proper ALDL port, the lights are
dim, and it appears to run through a bunch of things very quickly, without
stopping, or giving the ability to read them, then fades out after about a
minute. Im thinking power is not a problem, but maybe I fried my ECM output by
hooking up the SM to the wrong ports or damaged the SM. Do the SM and tach
possibly need separate power sources? I wrote this letter to TurboBob, but I havent heard anything yet. Should I just buy a new ECM? Thanks, until next time

Do you have any other aldl scan tool, like turbolink, that you can try with the scanmaster unplugged? Seems to me you really don't know if it's the ecm or scanmaster or both that has a problem. Do the coolant fan on the radiator, and the tcc lockup behave normally? They are controlled by the same internal driver chip in the ecm as the aldl data stream, so if they work correctly that's at least a little evidence that the ecm could be ok.

Thanks for the reply. The radiator fans go on as normal. The converter is non lu. The scanmaster flashes all different numbers, as if its recvd data, but doesnt process it correctly. On the other hand, when I plug the scanamster intothe aldl over just one space, it lights up 2.0 for a second or so, then goes out, but the rightmost dot never flashes, its just on then off with the 2.0

I'd suspect the scanmaster. Double check all your scanmaster connections, and if they look correct I think you need to send it back to TurboBob to be checked out.

Thanks, I figured he could look at it. I emailed hi days ago, but got no response. I'll try again.

My SM needed a better power source, after I tried to tap into it to get power to my guage lights. Try a better power source, and a new ground.

Jusy got my SM boack from Mike L @Full Throttle. It just needed the alligator clip soldered to make a better ground. I'm so embarrased on that. I should have checked it out, it felt solid, but it wasnt.
Thanks to him for fixing it, he didnt even invoice me. I will have to send him something though.

You guys were right too, to check the connections. Thanks.

Reviving...

I'm having the same issue with TurboLink right now.

Fan comes on, and the the ALDL stream goes to garbage. All kinds of funky numbers, MALF codes, -20 degree MAT reading, 512g/s of air through the MAF at 850rpm, etc. Car runs otherwise as normal.

However, I've used this turbolink cable for almost four years. Behavior is the same with my stock PROM, a Thrasher, and my newer Extender chip.

I noticed the post above by ijames about the ALDL, TCC, and FAN relay being in the same driver in the ECM, so this makes me really supicious that the ECM is on the way out, or is this a possible issue with the voltage out of that driver dropping? I've changed laptops to a newer model, should I try the AA battery pack on the TurboLink cable?

Anybody else had a similar issue, and what was done to resolve it?

I'll be checking that stuff. Linking here to make future searches easier

Resolved

Grounded the fan relay wire.

Dark Green, on the large ECM connector, second from one of the ends.
