Hey guys,

as some of you may recall, a month or so back i did the f-body radiator and ramchargers dual fan swap on my 85 hotair GN. The car ran great, and MUCH cooler. Since then, I've noticed though that it seems to be consuming coolant (actually just distilled water, no green stuff for me) and if i check the rad soon after the car has been running, there is a lot of foam, or tiny little bubbles in there. At first i thought it was air trapped in the coolant system finding its way out, since it had been sitting draining for weeks in my driveway, but after a few times of filling it with water I realized that wasnt the case. Next thought was of course a blown headgasket, but theres no oil in the water, and when i changed the oil last week, it looked just fine, didnt seem to be any water in it. Then yesterday I put the old compression tester on all cylinders to see if one wasnt holding pressure, but they all seemed to be pretty darn good. the numbers looked something like this

front

driver side-----passenger side
150----------------140
140----------------130
130----------------130

rear

Now thats a little bit more of a gap between lowest and highest than i'd like, but not too shabby, and theres none that are drastically lower as i would expect to see with a headgasket blown.

Now, I didnt hit any higher boost, or drive the car any harder after the rad changeover than I did before, so i dont know what would have blown the gasket. Combine that with the decent compression test numbers, and im thinking its not that. Is it possible to develop a small HG leak, that wouldnt really affect the compression numbers, but would cause the issues im having? Or could there be a leak in the intake manifold somewhere? Im definitely losing water, with no observable leak (no drips or streams when running) so i assume its leakin interally somewhere?

The problem isnt too dramatic; the car still drives fine (no noticeable loss of power), and i only have to add maybe a half gallon of water every other day or so, but I would like to fix whatever it is before it gets any worse. Plus knowing something is wrong with my car and not being able to fix it is driving me crazy.

One last thing, i only noticed this problem after the rad/fan swap, is there any way i could have done something wrong in the process that would have caused this? Oh, and in case this is a clue, my heater only works intermitently, sometime blows hot, sometimes not. Dont know if its always done that, or if that started with the other problem, as this is the first time since ive had my car its been cold enough to need the heater.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just dying to figure out what is wrong with my baby and get it fixed, and I figured I'd give all the info i had available to help you help me :) If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. thanks is advance!!!

A half gallon every other day is something to be worried about. If you're lucky, your p.s. floorboard will be soaked pointing to the heatercore. If not, then it may very well be a headgasket. I wouldn't start it again without fixing whatever it is.

PS floorboard is bone dry, and ive been driving the car every day 40 miles roundrtrip to work for the last month, even drove it about 700 miles round trip up to my family's cabin over thankgiving. And I meant to say about half a quart every other day, not half a gallon :) It drives fine, no loss of power, no hesitation, no nothin... scanmaster numbers all look pretty normal too. I cant tell if i ahve any white smoke out the exhaust, as its all so rusted out from terh cat back that it trickes out of a million little holes rather than the tailpipe.

You might have a cracked head and/or block. Does the water stay clear or does it get a gray color to it? Ever overheat the car?
The crack can be very small and open up when the engine gets hot so you might want to put in some green stuff and run it a while then pull the plugs, look for the dusting of green on one of the plugs...

with my old rad it would run kinda hot, and came close to overheating a few times, but I never had this problem until just recently. since I pu in the new rad, its run around 160 degrees, but got up to about 180-200 once when the fluid got too low (before I knew about my leak/bubbles thing). If it had overheated, and the crack gets bigger when hot, i imagine it would have been doing this bubble thing ALL the time with my old rad, especially since it ran so much hotter... and the water stays pretty clear, i mean, its not crystal clear, but then again, its running through a 20 year old engine block, i wouldnt expect it stay perfect, but its still very transparent, no cloudiness or anything

No More Guessing

What you want to do is purchase whats called a "Block Tester". Very simple to use, relatively cheap and you will have your answer in minutes. Mines made by NAPA. It's part number BK. 700-1006 "combustion Leak / block tester. I think it was around $35 dollars.

I don't know where you live but Autozone lets you borrow theirs for free.
Good luck.

ps, you may have trouble finding this because a lot of people don't know what it is.

"IF" it you narrowed it down to a possibly cracked block and or head, would you consider a GM stop leak tablet? Some people put them in their motor "just to be sure" anyway. Not much to loose in my opinion.

Never heard of a GM stop leak tablet... anyone know more about these?? Just out of curiosity at this point, as I'm still not sure what it is my problem is.

Someone suggested on my thread in the general tech section that it could be a leaking/bad water pump... what do you guys think? Would that cause this aeration/froth in the radiator?

Hopefully today or tomorrow I'll get my hands on one of those combustion leak testers and see what it says. I'll let ya know what the results are

Never heard of it either but remember reading something on this board while searching for head bolt sealing issues -- I recall it being used as a std in cadilacs??? Don't know, just a suggestion.
