Anybody know what the torque spec is for that bolt thingy that holds the oil cooler in place? You know, the thing the oil filter screws onto.

Did yours come off with the oil filter? I've had that happen to a couple of cars. I dont have an exact answer to your question, but i've just put them back in just tightening them with my fingers(as tight as possible), then screwing the filter back on with a little extra torque ( you dont have to crank down that hard) and I havent seen any come back with blown motors.

x2 I believe you are right Jim.

I think it's on this list, item #11 i think fits the description of what you are talking about.

Bolt Torque Explained

John

That sounds about like it. Sure doesn't seem like much torque for such an important location. That thing comes loose and all your oil's gone in a flash!

No, didn't come loose. I'm just putting the original one back on. I can no longer just drive to my local parts house and get a Baldwin B9 (biggie) filters here where I live. And believe it or not, when looking on the shelves for equivalent filters of other brands, there are NONE carried.
Maybe that's why I don't see any Buick 455's running around here.

It's not 18 ft lbs...I'll have to check my shop manual but I'm about 99% sure it's 30 ft lbs...

I looked up some old torque specs I had kept track of over the years...spec for stock adapter bolt is 37 ft lbs...bigger adapter is 40 ft lbs...that's what I have used for many years and never had a drop of oil leak out...just make sure you have the adapter seated correctly before tightening...if not there's a good chance you will crack it...I also use the thicker O-ring...Kirban used to sell them...not sure if he still does...
