Tranny/Converter test?

Is there a way to have a local shop run a tranny/converter test of some kind, rather than just saying "Re-build this"?
And is it converter or convertor?

external and internal checks can be made,such as the ones shown in our manual as well as a balance ,leak and runout test.factual info on its previous performance combined with clean fluid and a visual inspection usually mean its ok.however nothing is more thorough or informative than a cut open inspection in my opinion.
