**EDIT** I should add, that I made a couple of passes last Saturday, in which I had a 1-2 flare on each pass. This is the aftermath.

My trans does not part throttle shift (on a regular basis) from 1st to 2nd.

I have also noticed that the trans will not kick down into 1st, when coming to a stop. Very often, it will start off in 2nd.

TCC will kill the engine in 1st, if I flip the manual lockup switch.

The governor spring is still in.

I have NOT done any pressure tests yet.

Any ideas in the meantime, before I get my hands on a tester? Thanks!

Geoff, Sounds like your tv valve maybe hanging up.The no 2-1 can be from too much tv pressure(misadjusted cable) but that 1-2 problem concern me a bit. When was the last time the pan was down? Maybe time to inspect the pan, But try taking some adjustment out of the cable first.

Thanks Otto. :)

The pan came off the car yesterday. The pan bottom was pretty clean.

I'll try adjusting the TV again.

What might cause the car to die when the manual lockup switch is applied in 1st?

It sounds to me like there is a valve in the Valve body that is stuck. The only way to know for sure is to take it down and go thru it.

Otto -Thanks again.

Bruce - I'll try calling you tomorrow. Thanks! :)

Bruce- I didn't want to call you unless I did a pressure test first. :D

I borrowed a pressure gauge from Paul (Hawaiian Turbo) Thanks Paul! :)

Here's what I got.

@min TV 1100 RPM (RPM dropped as I went through the gears)

P - 100
R - 155-160
N - 100
OD - 100
D - 100
2 - 155
1 - 150-155

@max TV 1100 RPM (tried to keep the RPM at 1100)

P - 250
R - 180
N - 250
OD - 175
D - 175
2 - 175
1 - 175

Any ideas? Thanks!

Governor spring - Pinned by you, and OK. :D

Seal -Looks okay, I guess...:o :)

@min TV 1000 RPM
P - 100 (min 56-64 )
R - 155-160 (min 105-118)
N - 100 (min 56-64)
OD - 100 (min 56-64 )
D - 100 (min 56-64)
2 - 155 (min 123-138)
1 - 150-155 (min 123-138)

@max TV 1000 RPM (tried to keep the RPM at 1000)

P - 250 (max 173-198)
R - 180 (max 322-369)
N - 250 (max 173-198)
OD - 175 (max 173-198)
D - 175 (max 173-198)
2 - 175 (max 123-138)
1 - 175 (max 123-138)

Listed above are some specs I pulled from the book.

Min TV line psi check
Set the tv cable to spec; and with the brakes applied, take psi readings @ engine rpm indicated.

Max TV line psi check
Full TV line psi readings are obtained by tying or holding the TV cable to the full extent of its travel; and with the brakes applied, takethe line readings in the ranges and at the rpms indicated

Just some instructions from the book for you to follow. Just in case you don't.....Well I know you don't follow them, but just use them as a guide line.

And then when you're done with your forensic science detective work on your trans. Pull yours back out, throw my spare in your hunk-a-junk and take your trans to Bruce. Leave the CSI work to the pro's.:D :D

Swapped the valve body. No help.

Checked servo (or rather, gokada did). NOPE!

Swapped the entire transmission for a known good one. The only thing that wasn't changed was the convertor, and trans cooler.

Still starts out in 2nd!! Even in manual 1st, it starts out in 2nd sometimes!! WTF is going on!!!

I have the shifter cable disconnected, as it is binding, and will not go into 1st. It has been this way for years! I am currently shifting gears by turning the ring on the column.

Ideas?
