I have a 87 GN, 53,900 miles, car shifts normal under regular speeds in traffic, but when floor it, it will not shift to second.

Can anyone help me ?

Thanks, James

When did it start doing this? What if anything has changed on the car since the last time it worked properly?

Hi Greg,

I just bought the car 2 weeks ago, this past weekend was the first drive. The car was parked in a garage since 1998. The past owner passed away in early 1998, it's all stock.

When I got it trailered home, I found out it needed a fuel pump. I replaced it with a Walbro 307, and changed the motor oil.

I will change the trans oil next, when it won't shift to second, the engine hits the rev limiter and feels like its shutting down. It shifts fine in normal mode.

Thanks,
James

Hmmm. Could be the rev limiter or it could be the valve springs. Do you have an accurate, aftermarket tach on the car? (The stocker is worthless.)

Reason I ask is I'd like to know at what rpm your engine starts to flutter.

HMMM 87 grand,
My 87 gn is doing the exact same thing. I have been trying to figure it out. I have been told to check the tv cable adjustments and to check the transmission governor. If you discover what the problem is let me know please. My uncle is going to bring another governor up to st. louis to change it out, if this fixes the problem i will let you know.

My trans in my TTA was doing the same thing. Took it out and disassembled it only to find that all is perfect inside except I launched my convertor and my valve body and pump were full of metal. I am assuming the metal in the valvebody caused my problem, but won't know until I get my new convertor and pump and put it all back in..

Mine does the same thing...I have a non-GN TH200 in mine, so I'm going to start swapping parts out for GN stuff, starting with the governor, then servo, then valve body, until it starts shifting right. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
Jeff

Jeff,

If you're going to swap those parts, do yourself a huge favor. Install a matched TR valve body & governor together. A non-TR valve body w/ TR governor is a sure fire way to have NO WOT shifts at all.

The servo has nothing to do with shift timing but much to do with band longetivity & 1-2 shift quality. Put it in regardless.

Same problem here...:( ..wot no 1st to 2nd shift....Have to let off slightly then it will shift....This problem doesnt happen in any other gear at wot..Well...tranny is coming out next weekend...Ill post any problems I find...;) :p Shawn

Greg, thanks for the tip.
After looking at the cost of the individual parts I think I'll buy the 200R4 high performance valve body with complete transmission calibration kit from Poston, it's $298 and has the valve body, governor, servo, accumulator, etc. That way I only have to drop the pan once (hopefully!) to get it right. I don't enjoy bathing in tranny fluid...

Be careful

Ber careful buying them from Postons. Ask someone who has first! I have heard several horror stories. Not saying do not , but am saying do some reasearch first thats all! Just a word to the wise... BT

Ok, so has anyone here ordered tranny parts from Poston?

Jeff

Any one find out way the tran wont shift to 2nd, i have the same problem with my rebuilt trans and the same problem with my old one thats y i bought the new one.

Check your fluid level...

I pulled the driveshaft yesterday (unrelated topic) and lost a little fluid while it was out, so I topped the level off. I had read somewhere (I thought it was here) that the 2004R pickup will suck air under heavy acceleration, so some guys run a LITTLE extra fluid in the pan. So, while I was at it I put some extra fluid in the tranny.
Voila...shifts from 1-2 under WOT, and any other condition as well. It's still a pretty soft shift, so I think I'll go ahead and install the recalibration kit, but at least it shifts.
FYI...
Jeff
P.S. Don't overdo the overfilling thing. As Bruce pointed out in my other post on this topic the fluid WILL "burp" out either the vent or the filler tube and make a nasty mess which can also catch fire and burn your car to the ground.
