I am hoping someone may be able to give me some pointers. I have just picked up some kind of whine from the tranny on my 87 GN. It has maybe 500 miles on the rebuild and new convertor (9" AC - 3000 stall N-LU) The whine is worse if you start off in D from the light, less if you leave in 1st and manually shift it, but it also wont go into overdrive ? This just started last night all of a sudden, got into it a little from a roll and it just started whining...when you have it up to speed it doesnt hardly make any noise ? only when leaving a light. The temp never got over 150, and shifts were still firm..almost more firm than before the noise but I was able to nurse it home ok.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I checked the transmission fluid yesterday and it was a little low, but not burnt nor discolored. Started it up to see if the noise was still there, put the car in drive and it is still there. Dont know if this helps or not but wanted to post it just in case.
Thanks

well,

The list is endless. Does it sounds like whine is at converter cover or a little further back? Sounds to me like a vein ring in pump has something funny going on. Does it go away or subside in park and/or reverse? also, a filter clogged and pump trying to suck could cause it also. Maybe...... time for a peek in pan.:)

The noise seems to stay around in every gear except park and neutral..when there is a load on it, it whines...when you get up to speed it stops or gets quiet enough where you cant hear it. I am going to pull the pan and see if something is in there. The loss of overdrive is what really puzzles me.
Thanks a ton for your input Bruce, anything else please throw it my way..I can use any info I can get.

souds like when one of my torque conveters went bad.

it basically only made the noise while the converter was slipping (stalling)

Yep.....Red is onto it...

You definilty have a bearing in the converter going south. If in Park and Neutral, with no load, noise goes away, it is definlty converter bearing...:(

sorry....

Ok, now to the fun question....is this something that has to be sent back to the converter people or can a bearing be replaced by myself or maybe the tranny shop ? This is one of the infamous A.C. Nevada converters I read so much about...it has maybe 500 miles on it, and not a single high boost launch or 1/4 mi. pass...just roll punches on the street (brakes won't hold enough boost to launch). Will I see any metal flakes in the pan ? I am planning to pull this weekend.
Thanks again for all the info, this is invaluable as I know nothing about transmissions at all.
