I recently installed a new 3500 stall l/u converter and it appears to be whining when in gear, but not in park. It sounds like it is coming from the converter. What could be causing the whine and will it hurt the trans?

Funny, thats what my TC was dooing. The only problem is that my TC was the stock one with 110K on it. The trannie guy was pretty sure that the whine was a berring. When he put the new 2800 stall TC in, the whine stopped.
I know it is new but it might be a bad berring.

some hi stall convertors will display whining and fluid shearing noises based on their design. if you want to be sure it is not a pressure problem or pump related install a pressure gage and the numbers will point out if there is a problem.www.ckperformance.com

My trans guy thinks it is a bearing in the TC....I guess my question is can I continue to run it or should I take the TC out before it damages the trans.....

Eventually you are going to get small bits of metal (parts of the berring) in the transmission fluid. Not sure about perminate damage but the valves in my trans stuck every once in a while. Since my TC has been replaced, theres been no problem.

I was told that if I let it go too long, the berring could go out, the TC would lock up and the trannie could be torn apart from the inside.
