turbo a Briggs motor....

my brother and i will both be building a mini harley bike some time in the near future(i need another project like i need another woman). and i was going to use a 3.5 horse briggs and stratton motor and was thinking it would be cool to strap a turbo on it. i dont even really car if it would work, just want it for the looks if nothing else. has anyone ever done anything like this? or what are some small turbos that i could get for it? you would think that we had too much time on our hands....

Grab one off of a Chrysler 4-cyl from the junk yard

yeah, i was even thinking about just putting on my old junker stock gn turbo. it wouldnt work to build power but it would look cool. it probbaly wouldnt even effect the performance of the motor good or bad.

Yep. Tracy's done a good bit of super quality TIG work on my parts. Catch me on IRC and I'll show you pics of his single turbo 347 Mustang that is about to rumble out.

Jeff, I don't know the source of that turbo, sorry. You could always email Tracy; his email addy's on his web site, I believe. I'd go get a turbo from a Ford or Chrysler at the junkyard; they're a dime a dozen. Note that a Briggs motor has splash oiling only; if you actually want to spin the turbo you need to provide pressurized oiling, as Tracy did by creating a belt driven billet oil pump.

I think they made a turbocharged version of the 3 cylinder chevy sprint. Might be hard to find one though.

alternative idea...

You could probably find an old smog pump pretty cheaply and use it as a positive displacement supercharger. You should be able to find one of those in almost any boneyard, and you could control boost to suit your application by just changing your pulley size. Much easier than trying to find a dinky turbo.

I've thought about this a little, and I think that a large problem you would have is that the little carbs on B&S motors are just a gravity feed setup. It strikes me pretty much any boost condition would end up with your fuel spraying back up the line into the tank and not into the motor where you want it. What you would have to do then is pressurize not only the intake airstream, but also the entire carb and the fuel tank if you wanted to maintain that gravity feed system. Your other options, such as installing a fuel pump and/or injection, would be a real headache.
