Im experiencing severe turbo lag. The car is basically stock exept for a cold air kit and adj. fpr. I read a few people say it might be the chip. I just got the car 2 months ago. Went to the track and ran 14.76. It had a poston chip in it. I put the stock chip back but it made no difference. Car has 102000 miles on it. The exhaust is welded completely. I thought the convertor might be plugged, but i cant remove it without cutting. I also have no idea if the timing chain is factory. It is hard to start when cold and the gasket on the down tube is leaking. I get a massive amount of exhaust inside the car on cold startups, but its ok after that. Im looking to buy a scan tool, but dont have 1 yet. i have plans for the car over the winter, but want to optimize the stock setup first. Any ideas or comments????

Take a good look at the exhaust before the turbo.
i.e. the crossover pipe, driver side manifold between 3&5 for crack. Fix your leak at the downpipe. There are gaskets available if you can't manipulate it enough to seal it.

These thing plus the mentioned clogged cat can all cause slow spool.

Also, check your wastegate hoses and make sure they are in decent shape and replace them if crumbly.

good luck..and enjoy your new ride..

Adjustable FP regulator? What's the Fuel pressure adjusted to? If it's more than 43 psi line off with your combo, that contribute to lag.

Do you have a D5 Torque converter?

A plugged cat and pre-turbo exhaust leaks can cause considerable lag. Check for those first.

Check the wastegate vac lines

If you do not find any significant exhaust leaks, it may be someone hooked up your wastegate vac lines incorrectly, or used an incorrect "Y" fitting. The "Y" should have a .050 (Or smaller, depending on the application) restriction/orifice in the "Straight" part of the "Y".

The straight part of the "Y" (With the restrictor) goes to the wastegate actuator and the other hose goes to the brass port on the turbo compressor. The "Leg" of the "Y" runs to the passenger side port of the control solenoid on the valve cover, with both ports facing forward.

I can email a picture if you like. Let me know!

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanx guys!!! my fuel pressure was 48 with line off, so i adjusted that. But the biggest problem was that the previous owner had a massive tee in the wastegate actuator vacuum line for an autometer boost gauge. And the vacuum line was on the wrong side of the solenoid. I corrected that and it made a hell of a difference !!!!! Thanx!!!
