How much side to side play shold there be in a ta-49 turbo? I have just recently purchased a complete engine, Lots of great parts inside low miles since build, the previous owner could never get it to run as it should and blamed it on a bad ecm. I have had the engine to a good machine shop and all the stuff on the inside looks brand new, and was told that the specs were almost perfect, ie rod and crank balance, bearing etc., was told by the machine shop that the heads were only gasket matched and a little additional porting would help the motor breath better. The turbo was purchased from Kirbans by the previous owner but it seems to have alot of up and down play? what do you fellows think?

you will have up and down play, they say the shaft floats in oil while running, its back and forth play you dont want.

Thanks alot, I was getting worried that I would be purchasing a new turbo, but there is no detectable side to side at all in the turbo, and it looks brand new. Boy am I looking forward to getting this thing in a car and seeing what she will do.

Does it have radial play or axial play. Radial is side to side which is normal for a journal bearing unit that is dry. Axial play which is in and out...their should be no play.

I was told by a turbo expert that up to .035" in out is ok. That probably is very little by just feeling it with your fingers. I just replaced my turbo because I could feel a lot more play, probably around .25" .

Does the compressor wheel scuffing the sides of the housing indicate too much side to side play?

My TE-44 is doing that to me and its making me wanna upgrade to a new Precision BB unit.

Precision BB Turbo, How in the world do I explain to the wife why I need this, I will have it one day, but for now I will concentrate my funds on whats inside, and can't be seen.;)

Just tell her the old one is worn out and needs rebuilt.

Anybody know the answer to my other question?(See post above)

If you want my answer, then YES, you have too much play.

Upgrade time!!!!!!!!!

I was kinda afraid of that! Because upgrade equals money and fast, both of which Im too Chicken to do!!! Sounds like the new 67/65 is in my future!!

I went through it myself years ago. Fins were just starting to hit, then, in the process of wastng an AMG I limped home blowing smoke. All you need is some metal in your engine. Either rebuild that thing or get another one.

Yeah, Im bummed about not being able to roll anytime soon but at least itll be sooner than later. Turbo is cheaper than Engine!!!
