Guys,

The machine shop called me this morning and told me that I have a crack in my block, I went and looked at it and I can't decide what to do... It runs along the lifter valley, about 1" above the top of the lifter bores along the outside of the bores from inbetween the #1 lifters to the middle of the #5 lifters, about 8" long. I found no coolant in the oil when I tore it apart.

Do ya'll think I should just have them repair it (they said no prob) or should I start the hunt for a new block???

TIA

I had one the same way. "Had". I tossed it and got a new one. Save yourself the trouble and get another. It shocks me the machine shop didn't say the same thing. My shop guy called and said "I need another block because I damn sure wouldn't even use this one myself". Keep the main caps off it though before tossing it just in case.

There's lots of blocks around you can pick-up. I bet for less than the cost of their "repairs", the machine shop can machine a junkyard block to accept the turbo return hose.

Repairs cost...

They only want $150 to repair it. And fyi, its all HOTAIR.

Intercooler, why would I want to keep the caps?

Thanks,

hmmmm why would ya take a chance??? only $150 to fix??? what are they using JB Weld???? :)

I have a Stage block over at the garage with a crack in the same place going that same direction but only about 3 inches long.

Is this common?

My original 85 block was cracked the same way...no coolant in the oil either...

Go and find an 86/7 109 block and be done with it...That was probably one of the reasons Buick redesigned the lifter valley on the 86/7 blocks...Much stiffer and stronger compared to the older blocks...

You can just never tell and they are good to keep on hand as spares. When you least expect it you will wish you kept them.
