My wife just got laid off on our 10th wedding anniversary. Sent her flowers at her office and right after she got them her boss gave her a pink slip. She worked in a headhunter company that finds big dollar CEO's and that type jobs. Here in CT that is probably not too good of a company to have right now as the economy sucks around here. Lots of cutbacks, layoffs.

Anyhow, she was planning on quitting soon anyway as she is going into real estate. If she passes her state test she will begin training on Monday with a local real estate agency.

Question is, can she collect unemployment benefits until she sells here first house??

I think she can collect as long as she is not getting income from the real estate (on the books) if her real estate income is over a certain amount unemployment doesnt happen. But if it is under that amount (I dont remember) unemployment will supplement the income. Unemployment also restricts the # of days you work (here in NY)

I don't know how it is there, but in California, it goes until you find employment, not when you get your first check. Mark

You have to get income or money to make unemployment reduced or not eligible.

If she works for herself with no income it's the same as unemployment.

Salary plus comission is another deal.

No $$$ coming in I bet she can collect.

Sorry to hear that Mark, but I'm sure she will get back on her feet. Especially in real estate.

I believe there is also money available for training if she is changing fields.

I think you should just go file and ask about it. It's not like typical employment. Most likely she'll be 1099'd, which means she is essentially self-employed. I think you need some very specific information that only the unemployment office can give you.

Here in CT the unemployment is so bad you just phone in your claim. No need to stand in line anymore! She won't be getting any salary, just a commission when she sells a house. Obviously she just doesn't dive right into that either, she will have to go thru the training at the agency so things might be getting a bit tight around the Hueffman household. Need her to stop the Home Shopping network buying frenzy but now the excuse will be that she needs more clothes for work. Guess it is time to have TR Custom Parts sale to drum up extra business to pay for it!
