Vavle Cover removal

Im sure this has been answered hundreds of times but right now the search feature is not working so I have to ask it again. I have to replace the valve cover gaskets on my 85 GN as they are both leaking pretty good. I havent ever done it on one of these cars and was wondering what all has to be taken off. Now the drivers side looks like it just involves taking off the air tube and unhooking or moving the wastegate solenoid out of the way. Is there anything else? The passenger side though Im not sure. What will I have to take off? Just the up and down pipe, or will I have to remove the exhaust housing as well. Thanks for your help. Dusty

Just replaced my gaskets in June. The drivers side is easy, you can unbolt the wastegate solenoid assembly without disconnecting any lines and lift it out of the way. The two rear bolts that hold the valve cover on have studs with nuts comming out the top of them and thats what holds the wastegate solenoid assembly in place. The passenger side is a different story I had to unbolt the up and down pipes to get the valve cover out. While you are that far check your pass header for any cracks. The torque on the valve cover bolts is 4 ft lbs.

Ok thanks. What is the torque for the downpipe bolts? I already know I do have a crack in my passenger side manifold as well.

Im also going to be doing my trans pan gasket at the same time does anyone know the torque for those bolts? Thanks

TTT Im still trying to find out what to torque my tranny pan bolts to as well as my bolts that hold on my downpipe.

From GM Shop Manual

Headers to block - 37 ft lbs
header to up pipe - 15 ft lbs
up pipe to turbo 3 nuts - 15 ft lbs
turbo to down pipe 2 bolts - 22 ft lbs
trans pan - 7 - 10 ft lbs

With the turbo and associated plumbing, the passenger side of the engine is a nightmare to work on. Since you're going to unbolt the exhaust pipes, and if it's been a while since you replaced the spark plugs and/or wires, might as well do that now too. Your knuckles will thank you.

I already did plugs and wires a few months back with only removing the up pipe and it was a nightmare. Im going to wait until next weekend to do my valve covers so I have the whole weekend as it took me a while longer yesterday doing my tranny pan.
