I had installed brake dust shields on my stock front GN rims about a year ago. They work excellent at sealing the dust away from the rim. Drawback, less cooling effieciency
Last month while driving home, i heard a thump thump sound coming from under my car. It sounded almost like a plastic container was stuck and hitting under my car.
I get out to check it out and find that my drivers side front tire lug nuts were loose. You could unscrew them with your fingers ( i also had a wheel lock there). I thought maybe someone had tried to steal the rim and had unfinished the job or that it just happened coincedently.
Since i bought the dust shields, i suspected the cooling capacity of the rotors would be greatly affected but went ahead and installed it since winter was coming up.
Last week, had brake pads and rotors changed. Pads that were put in were raybestos quit stop ceramic pads. These pads are supposed to be almost dust free.
While driving around and braking i noticed the center section (the black area) of the rims emmit massive amounts of heat. If i put a drop of water there it would sizzle and vaporize. Lugnuts were also very hot.
Okay, so i decided to take shields of today. To my suprise the lugnuts on both sides did not take much tourque to untighten. One would even loosen just by the weight of my finger on them.
My theory: The extreme heat ( maybe exxagerated by the ceramic pads too) and cooling cyles (washing car also )of the brake system eventually loosen the nuts off. When i say extreme heat, i mean hot enough to cook an egg with...Downpipe hot.
Maybe some of you can verify this. I was using Kleen Shields which i bough from pep boys. It has no ventilation slots.
