Which end is best, near the turbine or down by the test pipe? Near the turbine would save my back but what fun would that be?

Naw, it has more to do with backpressure..
These things aren't "somewhat" affected by it, they are *absolutely* affected by backpressure....
Upon the advice of a good friend that had occasion to work on engines in a research facility for a living, I placed it on the DP (underneath, a few inches after it straightened out). Looks kinda stealthy, and is still easy to get at too...

So underneath means (a) on the DP under the floorpan in front of the joint where the test pipe slips on or (b) on the bottom side of where the DP drops down off the exh housing? I won't drag this out unnecessarily, just clarifying. Please respond with (a) or (b). Thanks!
My cryptic diagram of a DP:
