At Indy I blew my tranny (Turbo 350) up. I just got it back from my tranny guy last night. He showed me the busted parts and I am trying to figure what let go first. You will have to bear with me, I'm no tranny mechanic. It broke the sprag and blew both of the snap rings off of the shaft that hold the sprag on. One snap ring was almost completely straight and the other is a large "C". And the sun gear (I think) went up and was riding on the planetary. It had a heavy duty sprag in it. I think it is a Turbo 700R4 sprag.
My question is which broke first. Did the sprag crack and blow the snap rings off or did the snap rings blow off and crack the sprag? How do sprags normally break? Do they crack from the outside and work their way down or do they blow the center out? In his 30 years of transmission rebuilding has never seen one blow the snap rings off. But i seem to be good at blowing things up like that.
Thanks,
