My chip went bad and started throwing codes so I borrowed my cousins race chip till I got my new street chip in and it ran fine. Got the new chip in and it wouldn't hardly get me out of the driveway. It sputtered and backfired and wouldn't take any gas. I put the race chip back in and it ran fine. Now today it started doing the same thing that it did with the new street chip only I had the race chip in it. What could be causing this. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

PT-54, 42.5 inj, warlboro hot wire, Poston's 3" dp, H.D. wastegate accuator, big neck intercooler, Accufab FPR, MAF screens removed, Art Car 9" 3500 stall converter, etc..

I went through a very similar problem about 3 weeks ago. Mine was a wire pulled, barely, out of the ECM harness. I'll bet your problem is a bad ECM or at least ECM related. Mine threw a code 51. I hope this helps.

I agree with WH1. It could be that you have a crack in your board, and when you mess with the chips you are making/breaking contact somewhere. Or when you move the ECM around a bad wire is grounding/ungrounding.

:) Thanks WH1 and blackbuick87. I am going to see if I can find the problem.

My guess is it's the chip:

Make sure that all of the pins on the chip are straight and shiny. Some guys use a pencil eraser on them (very carefully) to remove oxidation, then blow the thing clean.

Another thing to look for is if the pins are excessively worn (thin) due to frequent in and out.

The chip could be zapped too, such as from static electricity.

Make sure the chip and socket are bone dry - use a little compressed air in a can, such as from Radio Shack.
