ever since i have got my GN it has seemed to have some problems holding a charge. If i dont start it and drive it everyday it will not have enough to start (it dies when it starts b/c i have a chip with a kill in it)...it will crank and catch but then die...i have a new alternator and battery...no lights or anything is getting left on...what should i look for or check??

I'd put my money on the Fan-Delay relay being bad. Probably kicking the fan on in the middle of the night, killing the battery. Check and see if the biggest relay on the driver's side is hooked up. If so unplug it and see if it helps.

Check to see if your BATT/ALT light comes on when you first start the car. I know it sounds dumb, but if the bulb is burned out your alternator doesn't charge the battery. Kirban's has a fix for it.

Hi,

get yourself a non-powered test light. Put this inline between the negative battery cable an negative battery post, don't crank the car though. With everything off (lights, radio) the light should be off. In your case it should be on. Pull fuses until it goes out (including inline fuses for alarms and amps etc.)

The brighter it s on, the more current it is drawing.

Abosolutely!!!!! Trunk light is the biggest culprit. The switch goes bad and the bulb stays on all the time. Not at all obvious to the casual observer. But after the trunk's been closed for some time, hold you hand on the area of the trunk in the vacinity of the bulb. Feel warm to the touch??

If all that checks out, look at the factory security alarm. Thats what did it to mine.

To those out there with Battery Drain ... I have found the problem!!!

If the Radio Clock stays on with the key off then if your car sits for around 3 days or more it will not start. So what you end up doing is you jump start your car and then go driving around for fun and to charge your battery. To fix this problem you can just disconnect the battery each time you put the car up, but that is a pain. This battery drain drove me nuts and so I put lots of time into tracking this problem down. I knew that the drain was around 350 milliamps and it have to be something that happened due to age to the car to cause the problem OR when the car was new everyone would have just taken them back to the dealer to fix the problem. In other words the car did not come with this problem. I did pull fuses until I found the problem circuit and it was on the CLK fuse. The CLK has lots of circuits on it and is one of the two power sources to the Radio. This circuit powers the memory for the radio stations, time and the radio will not work with out it. I remembered that GM car radio’s that have a clock go off if you turn the key off, and you can push in the volume knob to get the time with the key off. So I went back to the Internet to search for problems with the GM radio clock. I found the there are tons of Turbo cars out there with this same problem and lots of guy with the wrong ideas as to what is wrong. I found that there is a circuit that controls the clock and that some guys had this fixed by a radio shop but they really didn’t know what was fixed. I have had this problem for years and I wanted to know all about it. I then pulled my radio and replaced a shorted circuit and now the clock goes off when the key is off. I can let my car sit for weeks and it will still start, and it’s a healthy start. There is no battery drain period. I can fix your radio for $39.95 including shipping it back to you. Here is an added bonus to fixing the radio clock and if you think about it makes sense. There seems to be a lot of turbo cars that just die and or miss at idle. My car would do this, but does not seem to now, since I have fixed the clock. I believe that this is due to the battery having a full healthy charge. This puts the correct voltage to all sensors and the computer. I still need to have some more time to test this but I have noticed a difference just leaving a traffic light and at idle. So if you would like to have your radio clock light repaired then pack it good put your name and return address on the radio and then send it with $39.95 to David Ellis 9560 Heatherdale Dallas, TX 75243.

try a new battery.I had the same problem.I drained my opitma battery dead and it wouldnt hold a charge for more than couple of days.It had a bad cell.Get a battery tender instaed of unhooking battery everytime if you dont drive car much.

Have the batt checked to verify it's good.

If you have the factory radio, see if the clock is doing it. Had that happen before.

The under hood lamp/trunk lamp is another good one.

Perhaps start pulling fuses in the dark, and see if one of them makes an arc when you remove it.

So why don't you just tell us what 'circuit' may need repaired, where to get the part, how to fix it, and post a pic or two.... instead of soliciting us for $40 to likely solder repair a $3 radio shack part.... Isn't that the purpose of this board??

Because he's running a business of fixing junk factory radios for people that want to listen to horrible sound. ;) Not me. Any vehicle of mine that I care about, the stock radio and speakers find their way removed for a much better after market set up.

Battery Drain

The point was to tell owners what the battery problem was so they do something about it and enjoy the car more. I guess you missed the point.

I am experiencing the same problem. I will have to pull the radio and see what happens.

Thanks for the tip!

I had a mini starter on my GN causing my battery to drain. I don't know what happened to the starter to cause this but I put on a new one and the problem went away.
