I have a bone stock 87 gn except for a new throttle body and mallory ignition wires. What would be the best mods dollar for dollar for my new gn. Oh and i have a 160 thermostat but it is not installed would that help my performance any?

read around gnttype.org

I have done most of the usual cheap/free ones, but nothing compared to putting on a test pipe - 5 tenths! Would be nice if $40 a mod would keep yielding this improvement.

cold air setup
modern chip
fuel pump/hotwire
fuel pressure regulator
clean IC

Scan tool, boost gauge, then start tuning more boost.

Must have mods:

1. Scantool- Scanmaster $250, Turbolink (need laptop) $150, Directscan (need laptop) $250

2. Walbro 340 fuel pump - $100

3. Fuel pump hotwire - Do it yourself for $20, kit $50

4. Adjustable fuel pressure regulator - $100

The above mods will not improve performance, but without them you will blow a motor and/or not be able to improve performance safely.

5. K&N filter
6. new exhaust - Hooker $250
7. gut cat or use test pipe that came with hooker exhaust
8. Adjustable wastgate actuator - do it yourself for about $5 - easy to do

You also need to add some gauges.

9. boost gauge $50
10. Fuel Pressure - Get one that comes with a braided hose, that way you can tape it to your windshield while testing, so that you can see if fuel pressure is coming up with boost.

In my opinion these are must have mods before you start raising the boost.

My favorite performance mod is the SMC alky injection kit. It allows you to run 21psi boost and a high timing chip without running race gas. Best bang for your buck mod after all else is done.

First thing to do is go to www.gnttype.org and do the spring cleaning.
