What's a 99 SS worth??

99 Camaro SS

12,500 miles

Excellent - mint condition

Exhaust and lid & 4:10 gears

Someone is asking me to considerthis as a trade for my GN. I'm thinking this is a $16,000 range car. Is that accurate.

I am hesitant because I think these are still depreciating and will really tank when/if Chevy builds another Camaro.

What's this worth and where do you see future values??

Any issues with these cars. I have heard lots of motor problems like piston slap, etc.
 
my buddy bought a mint 01 with 30K on it for $16,500. I'd say no more than $13K for that car. The 01 was an SLP car too. It had the SLP cat-back, suspension and small things.
 
16 grand seems a liitle high for a 99 SS but I haven't checked the blue book. I love my 02 WS6 but definitely wouldn't trade my GN for one. The LS1 motors are great performers right out of the box. My 6sp bird ran low 13s factory stock and I ain't exactly a wiz with a stickshift. Some of them do have issues with piston slap but it seems to be mainly on cold startup and just a minor annoyance. The weakest leak in the LS1 F bodies is probably the stock rearend which will tend to break on hard launches.
I've been fortunate with mine so far. No issues and nearly 40,000 miles logged(knock on wood). :cool:
 
I've heard that the '99s, '01s & '02s are the best runners when it comes to LS1 F-bodies. A friend of mine has a '99 T/A (non-Ram Air) with a cam, Hooker LT's, Borla and 4.10's and he's run 12.30's at 115-116. But he beats the SNOT out of it and isn't afraid of breaking it....he's broken an axle so far (4500RPM launch on ET Streets), and replaced the clutch with a Spec Stage 3. Very grabby. But never had a single problem with the engine or trans (T56).

As for future value, I can't see them being as valuable as a TR. I've seen some LS1 F-bodies on eBay, and some people are asking absurd amounts of money for those things, sometimes up to $30K for an '00-'02 SS. :eek:

I'd have a hard time reliquishing the keys to my GN, but if someone waved an SS in my face as an even trade, I'd be really tempted. God help me if it were a Sunset Orange Metallic 6-speed with T-Tops! :D

More like a SOM Hardtop M6 345hp car. That would be worth money right there. :D

Piston slap is a NORMAL thing in the LS1 engine. All have it, its just a degree of how noisy it is. Give you a example of my 00 with it. I had it in the dealer for the window motors one day. They fired it up cold, the manager of the shop came out and said I might need to get it looked into. I said, ok.. wait till it warms up fully. He did, came out about 10 min later and it was running smooth as silk. No noise other then the typ valve noise.

It is characteristic to hear a knocking noise after starting a cold engine. This noise will be present until the engine reaches full operating temperature. The lenght of this time and the degree of loudness will depend on: ambient temperature, engine temperature, interior selected and underhood sound deadening level of content.

Engineering has made changes to these engines that reduce rotating mass and internal friction. Specifically, this was done by a significant reduction in the lenght of the piston skirts, piston weight and wall thickness. Due to the thermal dynamics and the expansion rates of different metals and alloys, the pistons are shaped in a way that allows it to expand into a full circle. When cold the piston is not round. It is slightly oblong, its general shape is that of a figure eight "8". the lightweight materials used in the pistons expand at a different rate than the materials that make up the block and cylinder walls.

The factors result in internal clearances when the engine is cold that allow the piston to have a rocking motion in the cylinder, which is the cause of the sound(knock). When the engine reaches full operating temperature, these parts expand to their designed clearances and the knocking sound goes away. This typically will take 2-15 minutes depending on conditions. The clearances are designed to allow engines to operate in extreme temperatures from arctic to desert conditions and perform as required by their owners.


This noise is NOT a defect and does NOT affect the long term durability, function, or performance of the engine. "

I'd say the car is worth around $14,500. Not much more, and the prices of the f-bodys are still going down. They havent leveled off yet. Hell the 3rd Gen's are just now starting to come up. :rolleyes:

There is an 2000 SS Hardtop (no T-tops) in Dallas for sale for $13.8 OBO with 40K miles. I'd much rather have that that the car you described (If your's has T-tops)

$12 - 14K would be more realistic for that '99.

That 12.5K mile car will probably go down to about $11K in the next couple years before SLOWLY creeping back up again as a "collectable". If you drive it, expect it to go down to $9K.
 
The only reason these cars will drop keep dropping is because they stopped making them. Otherwise look out below. I did notice the asking prices have seemed to stabilize around $15K for an avarage 4th gen. Maybe they won't drop as bad as the 3rd gens. I think you could get that '99 for the $13K range. Trade in is probably $11K.
