Whats the Difference between the 84-85 Engines and the 86-87 Engines, other than the intercooler... I.E. are the any internal engine changes, ect???

Thanks,
Jeff.

Yes, differences are present. I do believe that the 86 blocks had been beefed up in the side skirts. The 87 blocks had even more. I don't think the heads were different, but I am not 100% sure. Please correct me if I'm wrong on any point.

Check out www.gnttype.org for some good information.

throttle body/plenum/etc changed, from what I know. the plenum definitely did but I think the throttle body is different, not just repositioned for the intercooled cars. Another big difference was the programming in the chip to take advantage of the intercooler.

Heads bolts and the top of the block is different.
The 86-87s have the head bolt threads recessed into the deck surface, supposedly to help headgasket like. I've been using a 85 block in my car without any problems, and I run lots of boost.
