If a driver wants the trans to kick down a gear should it only happen when the gas pedal is all the way down or should it occur sooner?

Automatic transmissions are calibrated to provide both part throttle downshifts as well as WOT or detent downshifts.

some model 2004rs will not allow part throttle forced kickdowns by deleting this circuit from the plunger .this is not to say that a part throttle kickdown cant occur though .this is what we call a modulated kickdown which occurs when road load or vehiclespeed or throttle position suddenly change allowing tv oil (modullated)to back shift the shift valve or valves thus causing a kickdown and the resultant ratio change .by deleting the p/throttle kickdown circuit it makes tyhe valve body more vehicle friendly (synchronized to a specific torque curve ,vehicle weight and final drive ratio .,which assists in raising full throttle wot gear changes w/out disrupting lite to mid throttle shift properties .it also reduces shift busyness on uneven road surfaces such as grates bridges etc and shift hunting at certain operating conditions where the vehicle cannot decide operating ratio because of unbalanced tv up and down circiutry indecision .

I'm not sure what year it's from(TV cable), but it only happens at WOT. I prefer that over part throttle.

I was just wondering, when it kicks down hard (WOT), are there any possiblilities that damage can result from such a violent kickdown? I know this is the dumb question of the week because trannies are meant to do this , but I was just wondering with such a sudden harsh change???

Part/WOT kick downs are another one of those shouldn't hurt things, but ya just never know?  :(
