When to lock the converter

I'll be going to the track this week and was looking for some opinions as to when the best time to lock the converter is.,such as after you stage,or after 2-3 shift,etc.thanx

If you've got good octane and know it won't knock when loaded down, switching it at the line will result in the quickest ET. When the cars shifts into 2nd it will lock up.

If a non locked up 2-3 shift causes knock, you are better off waiting until 75-80 mph to lock it up, either manually or with a chip.

I have a 87 GN....Not to butt in, but how do you lock up a converter?
