Hey guys, im sure everyone and there brother has asked about which torque convertor would go best with their combo so i figured that one more clueless person wouldnt bother you much. Im not sure what type of torque converter is in my car but i do know that as soon as my turbo (TE-44) spools up, i can't get any traction untill a little after second gear.:) I was told that I need to get a higher stalling torque convertor. Is this true? As of right now, i have a TE-44 with blue top injectors (36#) and a burned chip for that combo. As soon as i get my tax return back i am goin on a shopping spree and buying 009 injectors and getting a chip burned for my combo. :D could you also tell me what company makes the best convertor at the lowest cost. i dont plan on doing any hard racing, but a fiew trips to the local track isnt out of the question eather.

thanks,
Boostd

The stock D5 should work fine with your turbo.

Take off the inspection cover and see what is currently in the car.

4 sheet metal screws and it comes right off. Should have D5 stamped all around the outer diameter of it.

I wouldn't spend money on a converter for your car, many other fun things you can do with it for mostly street driving. :)

If you need to pull the tranny for a rebuild or are thinking of a larger turbo that would be a different story.

I have almost the same setup, except for a comp cam 206/206 and am wondering the exact same thing, most people in the other section said go with a torque convertor, instead of an upgraded intercooler.......BOOSTD, I will tell ya that Thrasher makes a nasty chip for the blue tops and makes that 44 spool incredibly fast.......almost zero lag.very noticeable difference, and for $25 you can't go wrong. I went from a Reds 92 to a Thrasher 92, plus it makes the car idle incredibly smooth. I had this combo go 12.50 at 110 and a 60' time of 1.77 on slicks and VERY little tuning when I ran out of nice weather. There is more in it for sure.

I believe a higher stall torque convertor would help the wheel spin. I have a Kenne Bell 9/11 and stalls around 32-3500 and I have no wheel spin at all. I've ridden in a couple cars that have that problem and is no fun to drive.

Hey tanks for your info guys! im thinking i will stay with my existing TC. GN HEAD. how much faster do you think my combo would go with that new chip? ultimatly i would like to see low 12's hi 11's but i didnt think my injectors would take me that far ( im already having trouble with my car running too lean). that is why im getting 009's

thanks

upgrading (?) from blue tops to 009's is a waste of time (unless you are getting them for free...) many have run 49/44 turbos and blue tops into the high 11's with no problem

if you are going to upgrade injectors, get 50's

the single biggest improvement you can make on your car at the dragstrip is a converter....provided you have the traction to handle the higher boost launches....if you do not have slicks, good brakes/trans brake, there isn't much to be gained.......if you can handle the harder launches, your 60' times will improve dramatically and every .1 in the 60, drops.15-.2 off your et

everybody says a D5 works with a 49/44...that may be so, but a 3000 stall converter and traction behind the same turbo will win every time!

to be a bit more specific, the re-stalled D5 converters known as "Red Stripe", Orange Stripe", et al, will work just fine with your application

if you want more durability, step up to the 9/11, Vigilante, etc...but many more $$$

Sorry for the late reply, been out of town. My combo went from 12.80s to 12.50s with no change to the tuning other than the chip change, but the ambient temp went from 90 deg to 75 deg, so that would make quite a difference I would think. When I left the line at 7 psi and the Red's chip, the car hesitated for at least one car length untill the boost hit, with the Thrasher chip, there was NO hesitation, the boost was right there. I do not have a lot of tuning time at the track with either combo, but the Thrasher makes the turbo spool so quickly, I'm not sure a convertor change is necessary..........huge difference, $25.......cheap experiment, I am happy and am going to try one of the higher octane chips this summer. I think it really makes the TE44 work.
