Who makes best converter on a budget

A word to the wise...

A converter isn't a place where you go for cheap. Not only will substandard unit not perform well, it can easily trash your transmission if it lets loose.

Buy a good one and be done. I tried saving money and all it did was cost me more later.

I have the Precision Industries "zero stall" converter. It was a little pricey, but like MeanBuicks said, it's not a good place to be cheap.

I bought a Orange Stripe Conv (3000) from Cotton's Performance about 3 years ago it worked like a charm. It did stall to (3000). I used it with a stock turbo, big neck IC, 009 inj, etc. My car ran a mid 12's with 1.7 short time. The conv is very inexpensive. I used it on a stock Trans and a Trans Cooler. The conv is a 12" lockup. Ran great on street. I used it for about 2 years no problems then pulled it out I sold it because I went with a non-lock 9.5 because of new engine combo.

His 2850 rpm stall converter works excellent with my PTA-51/52turbo. He also makes a 3,000 stall.

Get ahold of Mark at Bowler Performance Transmissions. He sells a killer converter that is built locally (for him as per his specs) and the price is excellent. Gotta love the small town guys! He's in Lawrenceville Il.

I'm happy with my Perf Tranny 9" - 11" LU 2800 convertor I bought a year or so ago. I'm thinking it was between 500-600 dollars. Customer service is good too and the guy seems to know what he is talking about when it comes to turbo buicks.

I'm in the "don't skimp on the converter" camp.

When you are shopping, ask the vendor what the Torque Multiplication is on the converter. I bought a less-expensive unit for $400 and thought I was happy with it. Later upgraded to the Precision Vigilante and there's no comparison. You can get the single disk around $750 (?) and I'm sure there are other brands which are similar.

If someone had shown me the difference earlier, I wouldn't have wasted $400...

I have a restalled D5 from Pro Torque in Mekbourne FL. It works great in my opinion. They even rebuilt it for me when i rebuilt my tranny. Great customer service. They told me whenever i had a problem just to bring it back. You can buy it through Cal Hartline.

I'm running one of Bruces 12" lock up convertors, that stalls 2800 on street tires amd 3#s of boost, and I am very happy with it. A 9/11 is a nice peice though. Good luck

Check out Yank converters also...they went out & bought their very own TR test car to fine-tune their converters.

Yank converters are in some extraordinarily fast cars!

Compare 'em all, & buy according to what YOU want...it really helps if you call the companies as they can give you the best
advice, based on your combo.
