For those of you who didn't know, I put a trans from an '87 gn in my '86 gn the other day..once installed and we drove it the car would shift late outta 1st, go into 2nd and not go into 3rd and also the converter locked up when we came to a stop. (I have a TCC solenoid coming from GM tomorrow)

SO TONIGHT we swapped the shift cable (the other one was broken) and also swapped TV cables.
Well the 1-2 shift got alittle better..BUT THE DAMN THING JUST WILL NOT SHIFT INTO 3RD GEAR!!!!
There IS sufficient trans fluid..that's not a problem.
Tomorrow is the last night I can work on it this week because I'm going on a little vacation.
Tomorrow we're gonna put in a new trans filter and put in the TCC solenoid (as long as it came in) Now neither of these will probably have any influence on the non-existant 2-3 shift..but DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS??? IM DESPERATE!!

Make sure the governor spring is still in. That is what is sounds like to me. Ask Bruce on the Transmission page.

I thought if the governor spring came out that it wouldnt shift all together??
It's possible for it to shift 1-2 with no spring?? or am I missing something?
Any other ideas?

It could very well be the spring. If not, you may need to pull the valve body to investigate the possibility of sticking valves.

BTW, if you find you need a spring, we have them at TCI.

Well tomorrow we're dropping the pan to put in the TCC solenoid and to replace the filter..Can you tell me what to look for? What's located where? And what's safe to touch?
Thanks..

Bad Luck??? If I didn't have bad luck dude, I wouldn't have any friggen luck at all... I am certain my trans governor is hooped...and currently waiting for engine bearings to prove that it shifts on the 1 - 2 deal....but noooooot on the 2 - 3 shift. Follow the advice above and spend the $1 on a phone call to Bruce and sort it out.
Good Luck
Jim

Bruce says maybe the 2-3 shift valve is stuck, but I don't know how to tell that just by looking at the vb..How can I identify stuck valves or anything of that nature? Also how do you fix them?

I will give this a shot. i haven't worked with a 200r4 tranny but
i'm going to assume that the valve body is similar to a turbo
350 tranny. to see if the shift valves are stuck first unbolt
the valve body and lower it down. be careful because when
you do the seperator plate may come with it[this is just a
flat piece of metal with holes in it. if it comes down with the
valve body there will be some check valves[ look like little
steal balls] make sure you dont loose them and remember
which holes they came out of. they will be on the top side of
seperator plate. set the the plate and balls aside. now on
one side of the valve body there will be 4 or 5 circular recessed
holes with roll pins in front of them. push on this area and work
the roll pin out[one valve at a time] then pull valve and springs
out. clean them off, lube with tranny fluid and make sure it
slides in the bore free. do this for all of them. that may not be
your problem though. did the trans shift on the vehical you
took it out of? it may need a rebuild. to make a 3rd gear shift
the trans uses a piston to compress a clutch pack which looks
3rd gear. if the seal around this piston is damaged fluid can't
make the piston move. i believe 1st and 3rd use the same
clutch pack which would indicate your problem for 1st gear.
try setting your tv cable to the highest setting first. pull the
black covering around the cable towards the firewall. this
will increase fluid pressure to the clutch packs. then try cleaning
the valves.

Update:

Well here's the deal..The trans that we put in there after my original one stopped shifting was out of a fleetwood..It worked but I just couldnt deal with it becuase the car felt like it had no power and you had to let off the gas to shift, etc..well we took that trans to Cottman transmission (a VERY well known trans shop around here) and my friend from the shop is most likely gonna have that guy build me a "hot-rod" trans, pretty much a whole new vb, pumps, bands and everything for probably around $700.
Now it'd likely be more than that, but since I'm friends with the guy that owns the shop I've been going to, and he's friends with the guys at Cottman, they're pretty much gonna give me a big discount..but all I want is for this thing to work correctly and at the same time be fast..
During this whole time I've been without my car I've seen SO MANY car's on the highway's that I would've had so much fun with!!! Ricers, Mustang Cobra (with a hot chick driving!!) lol and things of that sort..
Thankfully, Jim (Vsix) is going to refund me the money that I gave him for the '87 trans that I bought from him, so that money will go toward building the new one..
Well I just thought I'd let you guys know what's up..
Wish me luck, heh
I'll post back once I know more.
Thanks for the help

Don't feel bad dude. I put in a new tranny and 9/11 converter and the next day spun a bearing in the motor. Now thats bad luck:( Good Luck on the tranny. I've been there and know how it feels.
