When I was in Australia you REALLY had to watch for motorcycles. You'd be sitting in traffic and there would be literally dozens of them weaving through. When traffic comes to a grinding halt, they still make great time. Keep in mind the lanes (well also the cars) are a bit narrower than most places in the states- which I'm sure is the case in Japan as well.
