Bout to upgrade IC but I have heard front mount will restrict air flow to rad plus may have to cut to make fit vs bigger stock location IC . just wanting to hear some thoughts. Thanks Keith
Hey thanks for the info, we got it set at 21 lbs of boost with stock turbo injectors , we have alky and bout all the bolt ons. I have only had the car bout 4 months bought it bone stock and haven't had it on the track yet. I hoping to dyno it soon to see what I have to the rear tires. The guy I have had working on it said I should be in the mid 12s, maybe faster. What do you want to do with the car? 12's, 11's, 10's ? if you want to keep it mild, stock ic has no prob with a stock car down to 11.80s..some have been way faster.
anything faster then that the efficiency of the stock ic gets in the way.. stretch slic's are great but nothing beats a good fm. There are many threads on this...
Imo leave the stock ic on until you upgrade the turbo, next thing to do is to upgrade the injectors and fuel pump..Hey thanks for the info, we got it set at 21 lbs of boost with stock turbo injectors , we have alky and bout all the bolt ons. mid summer can be 100 plus , the humidity is what is tufffffIn my opinion... If the IC engineers had complete freedom of design. The IC would have been front mounted.
How hot is ambient in the summer where you live? You may or may not notice an increase in coolant temps.
you can easily run into the 11s on a stock intercooler and with alky injection.the meth really drops the intake charge even with a single m15.mid 12s will be no problem with a stock turbo intercooler alky.. just wanting to hear some thoughts
What about function? I want to go with a fm, but I bought a Precision SLIC. I've modified and replaced the screws with studs. So I can bolt the shroud up nice and tight. I will tack weld the little sway bar pieces and I hope to modified the shroud so I can direct more airflow into the cooler. I met a guy last year at FT and he had a plastic garbage can mounted to the shroud and it came all the way out to being flush with the air damns. Once you get going that modification I think would help drop intake temps. I plan on installing a temperature sensor in the manifold to see if it makes a difference.Front mount would pretty much require some aftermarket fans. We sell both front and stock location IC's and front mounts outsell the stock locations about 10-1. No cutting to put one in but upgrading the cooling system is a given. Personally I have had both on my car and like the extra room in the motor compartment without the stock location IC in the way.
I see you are new to the turbo Buick world, and the first lesson is to understand optimum performance is when you set a goal with the performance level you choose, and your budget, you can then plan a build with the proper COMBINATION of parts.
Another consideration is how you will use the car, 10% track/90% street or the reverse?
The front mount intercooler should be considered when you are at least looking for low 11's or better and a 64mm or larger turbo.
Done properly with a FM, engine cooling is not an issue, and performance is light years beyond any stock location IC.
My car with a RJC FM will run with a 10 degree air inlet temp drop from ambient on a 135 MPH run, a good SLIC could be up to 100 deg. more according to our data.
Were you spraying alky on both setups during your data collections?
I only spray!I do not spray, or drink, alcohol!
I forgot to ask, do you run gas or e85 then?I do not spray, or drink, alcohol!
Interesting, I thought the most you get out of the stock turbo was around 23 or 24psi. after that they are out of their efficiency range and just produce heat. I don't know for sure, that is just hear say.Im on pump gas with Julio Alky , got a walbro and hot wire , all stock but what you can read , Mine is set at 21 lbs of boost and from what I have been told from my guys is I get a FMIC and we can turn her up to bout 28 lbs . She blows the tires now so my dilema is now to turn her up and get drag radials mounted on stock wheels or leave her as she is
you don't need a front mount intercooler to run 28psi on a stock turbo,i have run 30 psi on a stock intercooler stock turbo combo into the 11 sec range with a single m15 from alkycontrol.Mine is set at 21 lbs of boost and from what I have been told from my guys is I get a FMIC and we can turn her up to bout 28 lbs
