Passed CA emissions

You're not a proponent of smog chips? Ign and inj timings won't help reduce emissions? My car was tagged a gross polluter before I began using a smog chip. Coincidence... maybe?
Terry!Being ASC certified & running a smog station for many years,So just for the sake of argument & discussion.Smog failure diagnostics most often involve a tedious process of elimination. The read out you get from the station is just like a trouble code, often won't exactly tell you what it is but will give you a point of reference & a path to follow. H.C failures are the most common.Caused by missfires,First check the obvious, all the ignition components, vacuum leaks, low coolant below 180 degrees, cam timing, The reason I'm not big on gas additives are the effects they have on converters plugs & 02 sensors,Octane boosters, racing fuels, etc. kill these items.High C.O. failures are the next.chances are what ever effected the H.C.readings also influence C.O. big injectors, jacked up fuel pressure, chip programming ,saturated fuel cannister, plugged air filter, weak chargeing system to mention a few.NOX is next, caused by high combustion chamber temps, timing, EGR valves, vacuum leaks, carbon deposits,to mention a few. I have just scratched the surface on all the things that can cause failures & a poor running vehicle to boot.Once all of this is verified & correct should it fail then get desperate & swap a chip with less timing,You call it a smog chip if you wish.I guess my point is that band aids can sometimes help but won't cure the problem. Regards Lou

Thanks Lou, I respect your opinion and know you are an authority on these cars.

I feel fortunate to have an 11 second car that can pass Ca emissions without resorting to bribery. My cat stays on all year long, except at the track I open the bypass, but only put the emission chip in on test day. A couple years ago I did have to remove the intake and clean epoxy from the EGR valve to pass NoX.

I got the chip several years ago from Precision Turbo, I think John made it. I'm not sure what the TT chip is everyone talks about.

At least I'm good for another two years on the GN. It is a stressful time because of all the possible problems that could arise. I've got an older 911 Porsche that barely passes test-only also, so I've got older cars to smog every year. Thanks for our legislators in CA., we are never going to be exempt, so I can only hope they don't lower the "max allowable" to levels we can't reach and still enjoy our cars.

I hear you! So long as the smog program & state is owned & operated by liberals & socialist elitists this will be the case. If things get too ridiculous just go buy a certificate. Heck in LA you can buy a whole different identy for a few hundred. No problem!

Lou... John Stevenson here. You know me. We've talked on the phone before when I was going to buy that 86 GN up in San Francisco.

I've been involved with the Smog program here in L.A. since BAR-84. Fought against the independants taking it over for BAR90. Thought it should have gone centralized back then. After the manufacturers lied to the Indies saying that we'd have $75 smog checks, the indies went for it. Today... the indies aren't so keen on the program anymore with the widening of the Test Only scenario. It isn't a liberal/socialist/elitist issue, it's an issue whereas the state doesn't get their highway funds if they don't implement the SIP (State implementation plan). Many of the people that are in charge of the smog check program are conservatives and republicans. Same with the corporations that peddle their garbage equipment. Just went to a BAR meeting so they could sell us on the new round of crap equipment for EVAP testing.

Hows about this??

They want us to pressure test the EVAP line going to the tank from the canister right?? But they don't care if the system actually works or purges likes it's supposed to. Nice huh?? You can have a charcoal canister full of gas, but as long as the hose to the tank doesn't leak... it's a pass.

So you see.... it isn't a liberal vs conservative thing. It's a bunch of people that come up with one 1/2 assed idea after another and then implement it on us shops and the public at large. Just imagine if govt actually had to create, implement, and achieve something huh??
