Weird Gas Tank Problem

I recently dropped the gas tank to replace a dead fuel pump.
The new pump is working fine, and the car runs good. However I've discovered that its still very difficult to fill the tank. The gas has to be put in very slowly or the pump kicks off, or it splatter back out of the filler hole. Same problem at multiple gas stations.

Any thoughts on what I messed up that is causing this?

Vent line is on Yes. But even if not, wouldn't it just vent to air rather than to the canister ?? How do I check for Open?

Was the tank an OE tank? I know there were complaints about the exact same problem with the newer spectra tanks.

It is the OE tank as far as I know. It looks old.
