Well I finally found a place here that sells race gas and its Sunoco 110.
I know it varies a lot from car to car but say I have this in my tank mixed with a little pump gas to say 105 octane. What would be a good starting point on where to set my boost?
20#?
18#?
I run 16# on 94 octane.
thanks

Do you have a scan tool, or a knock guage? If you don't have either of these, then I wouldn't change the boost until you do. Be aware that leaded race fuel will kill the O2 sensor in a very short time, and if you have the cat converter still, it will plug it up quick!

I could kill an 02 sensor in less than 10 miles with c116. I'd put a fresh one in at the track, get 4-5 runs, and get about 5 miles from the track on the way home, and it would throw a code that the ) 02 sensor was bad.

What chip? A street chip? Even if you mix the 110 and 94 I would venture to say you could run 20psi no problem. If its a race chip, i dont suggest you mix it with pump gas. Drain your tank first, then add the race gas. I learned that last fall, added 5 gallons of 112 to say 2 or 3 gallons of 91. Turned the boost up and made a pass at the track, got 8KR in 3rd gear with a race chip. I lifted immediatly and was lucky. If you dont have a scantool, dont turn up the boost or add race gas until you get one. Just my .02

I have a scanmaster and R/A 93. I know it will kill the 02 I will have a new one for a spare before I even leave for the track. I am just curious, since 110 appears to be the best I can find

You should be fine starting @ 20psi with the 110 in there on the RA93 chip. Try to have as little pump gas in there as possible to start with though.

Just an innocent question but...

Does anybody have an opinion on the unleaded racing fuels that Powermist and VP make? Powermist makes a 105 unleaded, and I think VP makes a 106 unleaded. Would probably save money in the long run (since you won't have to replace sensors and what not).

Just seems that everybody is set on using leaded when there is another option out there. I'd be interested in hearing pros and cons...

Later guys,
Rich

BB87,
You should check into the xylene mix if your going to mix your fuel. $7 a gallon for 110 for 5 gallons and 5 gallons of 93 octane will net you about 101.5 octane for around $42 for 10 gallons. Mix 3 gallons of xylene (118 octane @ $6 a gallon) to 6 gallons of 93 octane gets you about the same octane for $27.

Do a search on here and on the web for xylene and you'll come up with several hits.

The bonus is that it doesn't kill 02 sensors.

Thanks BLACK6PACK, but I havent found a good source for xylene yet. The 110 octane was only $3.40 which I didnt think was too bad. That will go up in the summer I am sure...

When you guys get Xylene, do you buy any particular brand of paint remover or do you just buy a brand name that has xylene as an ingredient.

Where the hell can you get it for 6 bucks Brad. After calling about 20 different places, $7.19 was the cheapest I could find it. Their is one place in town where they'll sell you 15 gallons :D for $5.89 a gallon.

How long did you tell me you used Xylene in your car before you went to C16?

Hey, I'm doing the mix and taking it to the track on friday with Gabby. Looking for some mid to high 12's @21 psi with street tires. My tranny is acting up again so I won't be getting good 60's due to the slipping of it from 1st to 2nd. I won't need the slicks because I'm not going to leave with any boost to see If I can get it to shift right before I turn the Knob up to 21psi.

I did the xylene thing for about 6 months. I was getting it for $5.75-6.25 a gallon at the Sherwin Williams paint store about 1/4 mile from my house. Right across the street is a Lowes, and they wanted $10.25 a gallon.

I then went to alky injection. Its much cheaper since your not burning it up cruising around town, and you get to run a lot more boost.

5.75 a gallon

Where is that Sherwin Williams?

I need to go up early to Towers one of these days so you can show me where to go.

Remember, that was way back in the day, something like the fall of 1999! ;)

I'll swing by there on my way home and see what the price is now.

re: VP unleaded. I found a source here in San Diego for VP MS-103. I believe that's the highest octane unleaded they have. I ran it in my tank with street chips (Thrasher, RA, and JC) and couldn't get them to knock. I also tried a 108 Thrasher and got 24 counts, so the 103 was not rich enough for that chip. Now I have found a source for "Turbo Blue" 115 leaded at about the same price ($4.95/gal. ouch!), so I have made a test pipe to ditch the cat. I have an O2 sensor plug so I can get rid of that too, my Thrasher doesn't need it. Does anybody know whether I have to run the O2 sensor with the RA race chip? It doesn't make much sense to me to require the sensor when you know that the only fuel you can run will kill it!?!

FYI,
I called around today and found a local MAB Paint store that has 5 gallong containers of Xylene for $19.99 (ie: $3.99 per gallon).

Go to superpages.com and do a search under Paint Supplies for your area, then start making some calls.

MS-103

I happen to know that the MS-103 unleaded is some pretty good stuff. I beleive its rated at like 100 motor octane or something which is comparable to many popular examples of leaded race fuel. My best bud used to run it in his TT Supra (I know, not a TR) all the time and had no problems running like 24-25 lbs. His car would REALLY wake up once he tanked up with it. He had a hookup on it for like $3 a gal (buying by the drum). I'll probably buy a drum of it here in the next few weeks (It will look nice sitting next to my almost full drum of VP C16).

octane

I have done both the xylene and alcohol injection things. My experience is that xylene helps but even mixing it at the 30% maximum mixture there is no comparison to even 100 octane unleaded gas.The higher octane gas is just better.Alcohol injection is a pain to tune.I have been running 110 leaded with a heated o2 sensor.I have run over 60 gallons of fuel over this sensor and it is still going strong.I am using a trick that a member told me about.I turn my key to the on position for 1 minute before I start the car. This lets the sensor get hot.It has been working for me.Also I bought a brand(Silver brand)made by Borg Warner. It was 29.99 at the parts store.I made my own wiring harness.A lot cheaper than going through a vendor.Bruce

Only issue I see if using the ra93 is the chip is maxed out at 17 # or so, turning it up may not result in anything cause the chip is programmed for only so much being just a street chip. You may want to get a 100 chip, this is for 100 octane and you can then go your 20-22# of boost with that mix. I however would suggest draining your fuel and just running straight 110, you are already prepared to change the o2 and the extra insurance of higher octane is just that. I don't run anything but 110 in the 85, yes it takes out an o 2 here and there, but that beats the hell out of head gaskets...

I know if you are interested in higher octane you can order it by the 55 gallon drum around GR. But we are pretty lucky, we have two stations within a few miles that sale 110 at the pump and one station that sales 100 octane unleaded. You can also get it by the track (mid michigan) cheaper then at the track and it's torco. They do sale 112 at Stanton and 116 at Milan, just fyi. You going to the m-7 event October 5th at Stanton?
