ok guys, I raced a mustang lastnight and used the alky. I ran 26 psi , at the end of the run my egt said 1924 degrees! car is running tottally fine. i highly doubt that my pistons or at least the plugs can take that temp. I really think alky screws up egt temp and gives you false readings. I have a calibrated Fluke meter and a new probe never had a problem in the past. I thnink it is the alky. any thoughts?

thanks
Ralph

I have not had alky affect any of my readings. Temp is temp.

One thing is maybe your spraying too much and its igniting in your exhuast?

The only other thing I know makes EGT's climb is detonation.

Besides having a meter or probe issue... dont know what else.

I too use Fluke as my test instrument, but I have had bad Fluke meters in the past... not many, actually very little. They are the best.. but when your readings dont jive

All a K type meter reads is millivolts. No majic.

ok, so far it might be the fact that I was running WAY to fat. Going to check the plugs tomnorrow morning. I know the mete is good UNLESS it wasnt on K type setting!. Will check that in a few. I will give you an update razor.

I will second this thought.

If you run very rich (espeically if your ignition timing isnt very aggressive) you can see very high EGTs. I have had this happen on numerous occasions. My digital EGT reads to 2000F and Ive come within 50 F of maxxing it out :D

Larry, I would think my plugs are p[art of them would be nurnt or distorted if I really ran that lean. what y7a think?? I will check them tonight.

thanks

I got to get a wb02

Yes, using your other scan tools, moniter O2s to verify it is rich, then tune lean until EGT lowers, then begins to rise again....then you are true lean.

If your EGTs are high becuase you are running too rich (and timing is a little too tame), then you arent running lean in the cylinder. So, the plugs wont look the same as if you ran a 1900+F EGT due to lack of fueling.

I am not sure that this is 100% your situation, but I did have a similarly high EGT before and it was certainly due to overfueling and the extra fuel burning in the manifold (thus the high reading from the EGT probe).

Tell me about it....Ive wanted a WBO2 for some time now but havent loosened the pursestrings enough to break down and get one.

Hey guys, thanks for the reply's. I seriously think it was overly rich. I am going to check it out. It hurts to Pay $425 for a wb02 but it is imperative. I dont want to melt a piston. I am going to pick this up tomorrow.

I did some research on aem and heard it was a good unit. I like the gauge to. I dont want another box on top of my dash. I am also going to buy a audible knock alert from caspers. So I dont have to look for knock anymore. Just boost and aem, right next to eachother. I ehard you mount the probe about 18 inchs down the dp from turbo, sounds right?

thanks

Can those AEM WBO2s datalog? I am not sure if they can?

If they dont (and also understanding that you want a standard type round guage), you might want to look at something like the Wideband Commander. This unit is a standard type gauge but can also datalog (with or without a laptop) so you can review the data after a run and not have to constantly try and watch the gauge while driving. This unit also has a few other nice features as well. Check them out at http://widebandcommander.com/index.htm

While list price is $529.95, I have seen these gauges go for around $430-450 on a few group buys.

In any case, just another option for you to look at.

WHOA....looks like PLX now also has standard round gauges!

Looks like a good unit. But, these WBO2s are all kinda pricey for a cheapskate like me!

Julio.....maybe you need to add a product to your current offerings :D

Thanks Larry. I am think I am going to sell my entire setup and buy BS3 or Fast, this is gettign out of hand. But I obviously need the wb02 because I could have damaged my motor over the weekend, thank god I won that race! I tell you these hobbies are expensive.

Thanks

Funny how things snowball isnt it :D

Fortunately, I am halfway decent at checking myself before I blow all kinds of $ on this car, but it is sure easy to do!

well, jsut checked the plugs and they are fine. have some carbon build up on the ring and ceramic. the tip is a brown color.

thanks
