A little bigger cam and some headers then you'll be doing fine Darcy. Sounds good.

Is a bigger cam necessary, or will porting the intake give me enough power?

The cam isn't needed but it will help quite a bit. Here's a link to a great cam but you'll need to do some mods to make sure there aren't any issues.

Just opening up the intake will help a huge amount to increase flow but there are several other tricks. Wait until you get the engine out and I'll tell you more Darcy.
