I think the key is a boost gauge and knock monitoring. (Not sure how I would monitor knock on a pre-ECM car.)
Washer pump alcohol injecitons is the best bang for buck, IMO.

I have an 80' T/A also...
First remove all the smog equipment and free up the exhaust -
then start adding/changing things...
My single best addition so far is the MSD 6AL ignition...
When you're ready, Turbonetics can upgrade your turbo to a T3/T4 hybrid for about $700.00...
Oh...Get a boost gauge - It really helps!!!
