I bought a 85 GN as a restore and it had no alternator in it when I bought it. So I purchased a power master chrome alternator snd installed it.

The only 2 wires that were there to connect too were a red led from the battery and another red wire that was spliced to a black wire coming out from under the coil pack area.

I know the battery led is correct but when I attached this other wire to the hot led the volts light on the dash came on and stood on even with the engine off, So I figured maybe its a ground, I grounded it and the volt light seemed to worked work the way it should so I left it grounded.

Yesterday was the first day I got the car running. When I tested voltage I only got 11.68 volts from ground to the back of the alternator. Figuring maybe the altenator was bad, I brought it back to the store for testing. It tested at 14.5 volts when they tested it.

I explained my situation and they told me there has to be a plug in the connector at the top of the alternator that feeds the regulator inside. Is this correct? If so what are the wires that are supposed to feed that connector? Is there one or just two? The only one I can find is the black wire that comes out from under the power coil. I see no others.

Thanks guys!

the large red wire is the main battery lead for charging.the small wire is actually brown.its an ign feed through the volt light in the cluster.its sends ign basically to "tell '' the alt to charge.

does the new chrome alt have a main post for the charge wire and what else?
a two pin plug?if so,one goes to the charge post too,the other goes to the brown wire desribed above.
HTH

It has one larger brass connector on the back and 2 male pins on top that are covered with a rubber grommet if not needed. So the brown wire goes on one terminal? Nothing on the second or is there supposed to be a wire there as well. If I only need the one brown wire does it matter which terminal it goes on? Is there a difference?

Thanks alot!

I think I got it now! What you are saying is. The main post gets the battery wire plus a wire jumper that jumps to the alternator connection (the two pin) The brown wire goes on the other..Is that correct? Please tell me yes! I feel like I have accomplished something! lol....Does it matter which wire goes to which connector on the two pin?
Thanks again!

for the two pin connector, did you get a small harness/plug for it? if so,what is the colors on the two pin plug?

I didnt get it yet..I ordered it but who knows if the colors are going to be the proper colors anyway. dealing with advance auto is like dealing with kindergarden! Thay have nothing but will order it for you and get it in three weeks. Anyway, What I tried last night was. I connected the large red batt cable to the main post on the back. I connected the brown wire to one of the two terminals on the top. Then I connected a jumper from the other top terminal to the same post the battery cable goes to. I have no idea if its working though! I started the car and read 14+ volt when I test it from the post on the back of the alt to ground on the alt but when I test at the battery I only get 12+ volts..Shouldnt I be getting the 14+ volts at the terminal of the battery as well? I dont know what the hell is going on! When the car does run its runninglike total crap. It seems the more I get into the more confusing it gets. Threw research no I am thinking maybe the firing order is off. I have one printed sheet with the firing order one way and another that is totally different. Both are for the 85 GN....lol
