In my 87 GN that I just got it feels light that the 1st to second shift is taking to long. The Transmission shifts extemely well. Very strong shifts. That first shift under full throttle it feels like the engine peeks and then rides there for a second or two before it shifts. Like it is holding the shift point to a higher rpm. Higher than what it feels like it should, past the where the engine is making power.
I hope I have explained it well enough. I am borrowing a friends Scanmaster tomorrow so I can watch my RPMs. I probably won't get a chance to hook it up until Tuesday. But any way what is the optimal RPM for a GN to shift at. The engine itself is stock.

Thanks help.

the correct shift point for a 1/2 in an 86/87 gn with proper tv adjustment, valve body, governor ,rear end ratio, and tire size is 5100 to 5200 rpms.any higher will usually cause the driveshaft to play catch up with the tv pressure before itll shift to 2nd gear.

Thanks for the info. But is there a way to change the shift point on the trans. That is the only shift that seems to high an rpm before it shifts.

Thanks, Matthew

mine did the exact same and was cavitating. I just added 3/4 - 1 qt extra fluid and walla. Easy fix and no fluid out of the fill tube.

1-2 shift

If you are trying to fix a 1-2 shift with just adding fluid, you are using a band aid for a much more harmful problem. If adding extra fluid seems to solve the problem, it is telling you that you are having a cavitation problem and you need to fix that, not put a band aid on it. We all hopefully know what adding extra fluid does. You are pushing your fluid away from the pick up during acceleration. It can be fixed properly with a low rear pick up sump. The additional fluid I would try as a diagnostic approach, but wouldn't continually run my trans overfilled. If running the additional fluid stops the long 1-2 shift, then order a bottom feed sump/filter and FIX the problem,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Mark :D
