I think I need to replace a cam sensor on my mom's 1992 Toronado Trofeo with the 3800 motor. Where is the cam sensor located? And whats the procedure for replacing it.. Also, there are 2 parts listed at Advance for the code that came up, it can either mean a cam position sensor and/or a crank postion sensor. I can't remember the code number that came up, but I'll look for the ticket.. What you guys think??

I can't remember which years had a cam sensor and which years had a combination crank/cam sensor.

For the ones with a cam sensor, it would be located in the timing cover, below the water pump, nearer to the firewall if you are leaning over the passenger fender looking at the engine.

Be sure to check that the magnet is still on the timing gear in the proper postion. You can check this through the hole after the cam sensor is removed. More often than not, the magnet comes loose and smacks the sensor. If this is the case, the timing cover will have to be removed to repair properly.

Sounds like I'm going to need to pull the timing cover and it sounds like something that maybe I should bring in to have done. Its common (or so I've been told), for the magnets to become weaker with age, and given that the car is pretty old, I'd imagine thats the problem.. Argh.. it is for sale, so hopefully someone buys it the way it is so I don't have to do it :)/
